Former city commissioner Charlie Hales and Rep. Jefferson Smith appear headed to a runoff in November in the race for Portland mayor.
As of midnight, Hales has a comfortable lead with 38 percent of the vote, followed by Smith with nearly 30 percent. Businesswoman Eileen Brady has slightly less more than 23 percent.
Only the top two finishers go on to the general election in November....

City Commissioner Amanda Fritz and her challenger, Rep. Mary Nolan, are in a dead heat in Tuesday's voting, almost guaranteeing the two will face off in the general election in November.
As of 9 p.m. Nolan has 44.7 percent and Fritz 44 percent.

Steve Novick, a political upstart four years again in a narrow U.S. Senate race, won election to the Portland City Council on Tuesday night, easily getting a majority of the votes against six lesser-known opponents.
In early returns, Novick has 73 percent of the vote. His nearest opponent, Scott McAlpine, has 8 percent.
