Judging Willamette Week’s first-ever comic strip contest, the Big Strip-Off, was no easy task. Working with the theme "Legends of Portland"—an often loosely interpreted theme—local cartoonists turned in more than 60 entries. It was up to the judges to find the most creative (of course, the fact that over half the entries were disqualified for not meeting certain guidelines meant the judges only had to view about 30 entries each).
Each judge selected eight strips that he or she felt were the most creative, with one of those strips being the top pick. But at the end of the day there was no clear winner, as none of the judges agreed on the same top pick. There were, however, six entries that had been selected by at least two of the judges. These six entries were the winning strips.
On this website, you will find the other selections made by the judges. These
are the strips that were selected by various judges, but didn’t
make the top pick list. There are also a few strips that were very
good, but ultimately were disqualified from competition. These strips
were disqualified all for the same reason—they were the wrong size.
