HENRY HILLMAN JR. AT ELIZABETH LEACH

One Review

flashing lights thursday, dec. 1

Pulliam Deffenbaugh plays the Grinch Who Stole First Thursday.

Hap Tivey's show at Elizabeth Leach (417 NW 9th Ave., 224-0521. Closes Jan. 21) channels Barnett Newman and Dan Flavin, with color-blocked planes glowing with LED lights. The works are most effective at their simplest (RGB for Dan), less convincing when they pollute minimalist purity with chunky organic forms (Sand Garden). On First Thursday, Tivey's works were nicely complemented by Henry Hillman Jr.'s bravura glass sculptures, which emanated a limpid, liquid glamour.

There was a different sort of light show at Pulliam Deffenbaugh on First Thursday. It wasn't enough that gallery-goers had to brave coiffure-ruining rain and headlight-inducing cold the night of Dec. 1—no, Pulliam Deffenbaugh had to add insult to injury by playing the Grinch Who Stole First Thursday. When I arrived at the gallery's doorstep at 8:25 pm to take in Anna Fidler's show, the place was dark and deserted. A well-dressed man stood outside smoking while his female friend made a cell-phone call. "They kicked everybody out!" the man complained to me. "There were 20 or 30 people in there, and at 8:10 pm the gallery people started flashing the lights, like intermission at a show. I heard one of them say, 'Time to go—we should've closed at 8.'" I told the man about a First Thursday in September 2004 when I'd observed a collector scrutinizing a Brendan Clenaghen piece. Instead of approaching the collector to chat her up about the piece, gallery co-owner Rod Pulliam made a beeline to the light switches—it was 8:05 pm, God forbid—and proceeded to flip them on and off as if his life depended on it.

What I want to know is this: What do Rod Pulliam and Mary Ann Deffenbaugh have at their homes that's so incredibly fabulous that they have to rush home, breathlessly, to return to it? An Orgasmatron? Piles of gold doubloons to frolic in? Mountains of cocaine served on platters by Versace models? Liz Leach, Mark Woolley, Butters, the entirety of Everett Station Lofts, and even Lawrence Gallery stay open significantly longer than Pulliam Deffenbaugh and use common sense and courtesy—not the unforgiving clock—in determining when the night is done. Hey, Grinch: If you don't want to accommodate art lovers on First Thursdays, then don't participate. If you do, drop the sourpuss routine and stop flicking the fucking lights! RICHARD SPEER. Pulliam Deffenbaugh, 929 NW Flanders St., 228-6665. Closes Dec. 30.
