For the People, By the People

Celebrate the start of summer the old-school way, with a street par-tay! Expect nothing less than organic beer, square dancing, hula-hooping and sidewalk-chalking. The Cat's Pajamas

It looks like Paris' and Nicole's furry (doggie) friends are out: The newest trend is cats, and Compressed Pattern is showcasing its hippest cat products. A silent auction will be held Wednesday evening for the Oregon Humane Society, and kitties will be on hand both days, in case you're lookin' for a friend. Design Within Reach Portland Studio, 1200 NW Everett St., 220-0200. 6-9 pm. $10 donation.

Shabby Chic

If you scour flea markets, the ReBuilding Center can teach you how to construct picture frames, planters and simple, artful tables from, well, junk. The Bus Project's 2006 gala event, DRIVE, a political fundraiser, also features entertainment from the Retrofits, Calvin Johnson, and Liv & the Warfield Project, not to mention precision drummers, fire dancers, the Puddle Cutters Moped Gang and a giant parachute!
