But if it is, this won't be the last you hear from its members: Joe Fickel's glossy prog loops have proved him adroit, and his next project—which he says could be death metal—displays a keen interest in pushing his abilities to the next level. Vocalist/keyboardist Emilie Strange has already taken her stage presence to a new group: dance jokesters Tranquilazer. In any case, this could be your last chance to say, "I saw their old group back in '06," so you might wanna check it out. JASON SIMMS. Berbati's Pan. 9:30 pm. $6. 21+.^ Back to Top

Boombox Friday: DJs Collage, Filastine, P.Disco, BJ & E3Holocene | 1001 SE Morrison St., 239-7639 [ map] [WORLDTRONICA] Filastine creates solid bumps that pack in more art and social-studies cred than anything that's made it into my stereo since, um, Rhythm of the Saints. Kidding! (I hope.) It's rooted in heavy booty-bass pounds—perfect for Holocene's increasingly rad Boombox Fridays—soaked with Middle Eastern flavor, found sounds, multilingual rhyming and abstract productions. These are beats that could charm a snake. (Yes, totally bring your snake!) Furthermore, what's the last hip-hop track you've heard with a sitar breakdown? Yeah, it's been a while for me, too. I should also mention that this is all dangerously sexy. Getting-down-in-the-corner sexy. MICHAEL BYRNE. Holocene. 9 pm. $5. 21+.^ Back to Top

Birdmonster, Division DayLola's Room at the Crystal Ballroom | 1332 W. Burnside St., 225-0047 [ map] [ROCK] Hailing from San Francisco, Birdmonster is the type of band that begs comparisons, from its Strokes-y bass lines and lead man Peter Arcuni's mix of Ryan Adams' and Joe Strummer's vocal stylings, to the rest of the band's obvious respect for the Clash's pulsing punk. And there's a whole lot of Bay Area pop-punk tendencies in here, too. That is all fine, considering that the sum of those influences adds up to a band who knows how to mine the rock canon for all the fun parts. But these guys also manage to deconstruct those bits too, playing with unconventional instrumentation (banjo and cello), leaving certain parts of songs delightfully unfinished, and going off on the odd musical tangent—sometimes bringing it back around and sometimes not—which makes them pleasingly unpredictable. If you sense a ballad coming on, though, I suggest going to the bar. Sentiment is something that simply cannot be copped. MARK BAUMGARTEN. Lola's Room at the Crystal Ballroom. 7:30 pm. $7 advance, $9 day of show. 21+. ^ Back to Top

Graves, Gill Landry, Kaitlyn ni DonovanMississippi Studios | 3939 N Mississippi Ave., 288-3895 [ map] [HUSHED FOLK] I don't know if it's accurate to call Kaitlyn ni Donovan's new stuff "experimental," but I know it's left-field enough to keep her out of "singer-songwriter" territory, as she verges into psych à la Six Organs of Admittance and subtle soundscaping in the vein of Tara Jane O'Neil. One track, "Pearls in China," nearly touches the 15-minute mark, slowly burning itself out in a chamber-string drone only to resurrect itself in an eerie sequence of reversal effects and subterranean bass-drum thumps. It's gorgeous and wholly unexpected. I understand she's been doing this for almost a decade...WTF?! Why is this still a "buried" artist, and why have reviewers been saying that same thing since 2000? This is also the record release of Graves, a lo-fi folk-rock collective that sort of makes me think of the Microphones. I fucking love the Microphones. MICHAEL BYRNE. My Own Black Eye, Superego 99, Super PlusRed Room | 2530 NE 82nd Ave., 256-3399 [ map] [TRASH POP] The lovely Portland ladies in Super Plus (it's, like, a tampon reference—get it?) play a pretty loosey-goosey brand of trash pop, or as they call it, "estro-swamp rock." It's got plenty of girl-power posturing, comically bitchy lyrics ("If you can't live without me/ Why aren't you dead?"), doo-woppy backup vocals, juvenile swearing and, occasionally, rhythm. But this band's lack of musical prowess doesn't really matter, 'cause its skanky, cheerleader-esque outfits and sense of humor often make up for the amateur quality of its songs. The live show must be a mess, but sometimes messy is fun, right? AMY MCCULLOUGH. Red Room. 9 pm. Free. 21+.^ Back to Top

Mastodon, Converge, The BronxRoseland | 8 NW 6th Ave., 219-9929 (Grill), 224-2038 (Theater) [ map] [METALCORE] When Converge subjected Loveland to its brand of metal-heavy math rock, which sounds like Slayer if Picasso painted them in 2004, Portlanders got to see an interesting dynamic between vocalist Jacob Bannon and bassist/backing vocalist Nate Newton. While the higher-voiced (both while screaming and talking) Bannon casually joked and spoke naturally between songs, Newton's eyes would widen as he exaggerated his booming East Coast accent (the band's from Boston, but I'm not sure where he's from) to both help the crowd get rowdy and tell them to "take care of each other." A Converge show is an amalgamation of tiny-but-important elements: It's a little theatrical, a little honest, a little bit serious and a little bit of a party, too. JASON SIMMS. Roseland. 9 pm. $15. Demob, Sado-Nation, Defiance, SkullsplitterSabala's at Mount Tabor | 4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 238-1646 [ map] [PUNK] Demob's signature tune, "No Room for You," found its way into my teenage Discman via a reissue of Posh Boy's Punk & Disorderly compilation. The marching beat and speedy rockabilly bass line held my attention long enough for me to be touched by a song, written almost 20 years ago in Gloucester, about the same problem punkers in towns like Albuquerque have all the time: venue closures. I loved the tune, but I figured Demob was just another obscure band I'd never see live. Little did I know that around the same time, Brian GTA (who runs Grand Theft Auto Records in L.A.) was busy tracking down the British four-piece. When he rounded them up, they apparently sucked at first, but the tunes they recorded once they got warmed up matched the feeling and sound of the old stuff perfectly. According to Demob's website, local punk icon Mish Bondage of Sado-Nation "worked her socks off" to get the band on tour over here. I actually have no idea if this show will be good or if it'll flop, but I do know that a lot of old-school punk bands on obscure compilations stay there, and it probably means something that some well-respected folks went well out of their way to bring you this show. Local duo Hillstomp plays rootsy blues with punk energy and junkyard percussion, and Moonshine Hangover is a Southern-rock wet dream, though that wetness might mean you fell asleep wasted and peed the bed.
