[April 4th, 2007] KNOW ABOUT IT It was a mixture of laughter and tears for audience members at the screening of Darius Goes West (see "Roll Film, WW, March 28, 2007) last Thursday, the opening night of the Longbaugh Film Festival . The screening was a fundraiser for Charley's Fund (charleysfund.com), a nonprofit that fights Duchenne muscular dystrophy. With people stuffing 100 dollar bills into envelopes for Charley's Fund, and much of the film's crew besieged by the crowd, both the film and the event proved that there are still Portlanders in touch with their humanity. The film has proven to be so popular—DGW was named Best Documentary of the festival—that it is being held at Living Room Theaters for several encore screenings this week (see Screen listings, page 55, for screening times). Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Charley's Fund. See page 58 for a full rundown on Longbaugh weekend.
ALBINA OLÉ Former Higgins sous-chef Kenny Hill honed his skills for almost seven years under master Greg Higgins and will soon reveal his very own Mexican eatery near North Mississippi early this summer. Named after a tree native to Southern Mexico, Trebol will feature regional Mexican cooking with a local and sustainable bent, using organic ingredients wherever possible. What else would you expect from a Higgins protÉgÉ worth his finishing salt? The restaurant will anchor a lazy corner of the Humboldt neighborhood, a stumble away from the Albina Press. Trebol will seat 100 when the weather's good, and its bistro is slated to stay open until midnight.
THIS ONE TIME, AT FLUTE CAMP... Dawn Weiss was probably pissed when—after 25 years as a principal player in the Oregon Symphony—new Music Director Carlos Kalmar came in and cleaned house, giving Weiss the boot in 2005. Well, Weiss has picked herself up, is playing out with more frequency and just announced this week that she and two flutey colleagues are launching Flute Boot Camp 2007. Over two consecutive weeks in mid- to late July, Weiss and friends will drill their charges in technique, repertoire and musicality for solo and ensemble settings. Call 624-0553 to sign up, but keep this in mind: The camp is strictly BYOF.

Nicolas Restaurant, Inc. is in no way affiliated with Habibi Restaurant, Inc., which acquired the Long Island Cafe, although Habibi is owned by a former employee of Nicolas. WW regrets the error.
