[May 14th, 2008]
Sen. Barack Obama once remarked on the long odds of a “skinny guy from the South Side with a funny name” finding success in American politics.
How much more improbable then that Oregon—an overwhelmingly white state 1,700 miles from his Chicago home—could finally put the Illinois senator over the top this Tuesday, May 20, in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
The Obama campaign looks to that date as the day to finally declare victory over Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), after an anticipated Oregon win gives Obama a majority of pledged delegates nationwide. Little wonder then that Obama’s third Oregon swing May 9-10 felt more like a victory lap than a campaign stop. In Beaverton, Albany, Eugene and Bend, Obama test-drove a new strategy of targeting Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and largely ignoring Clinton.
WW caught up with Obama following a town-hall meeting in Albany, where he spoke to a crowd of 3,000. After our longer interview with his rival (“Twenty Minutes With Hillary,” WW, April 9, 2008), we asked Obama in the much smaller amount of time granted by his campaign about Oregon issues like medical weed, local politics and a healthcare plan from Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
WW: What's the biggest difference between you and Hillary Clinton on an Oregon-specific issue?
Barack Obama: I don't spend all my time reviewing Sen. Clinton's positions. But I can talk to you about my positions on some issues that are very specific to Oregon. I think it's important for a state to have the ability to make decisions about the siting of liquefied natural gas stations. I think it's important for us to have a policy on county payments that is consistent and that allows for long-term planning for local communities, so that they're not scrambling to figure out do they have to lay off deputies from the county or do they have to close libraries. So I'm committed to working with Sen. [Ron] Wyden and Congressman DeFazio and others to make sure that we've got a system to help deal with counties where so much of the land is taken up by federal lands.
Can you see a time when those timber payments would go away?
What I'd want to do is negotiate with local counties to figure out how are we ensuring that basic necessities are paid for, and do it in a way that recognizes that the best way to handle this over the long term is to generate more economic growth in these communities. But we've got to do it in a way that is environmentally sound as well.
Would you stop the DEA's raids on Oregon medical marijuana growers?
I would because I think our federal agents have better things to do, like catching criminals and preventing terrorism. The way I want to approach the issue of medical marijuana is to base it on science, and if there is sound science that supports the use of medical marijuana and if it is controlled and prescribed in a way that other medicine is prescribed, then it's something that I think we should consider.
What's the nicest thing you can say about Sen. Gordon Smith?
I think Gordon Smith is a very nice man. I think he's very gracious, very polite, and I enjoy talking to him. I think Gordon Smith's problem is that he rarely breaks away from George Bush and the Republican agenda that I think has done this country great damage. But personally I think he's a perfectly decent person.
The hottest race besides yours on Oregon's May 20 ballot is the Democratic senate contest between Steve Novick and Jeff Merkley.
I have no opinion on that.
Do you care who wins?
I have no opinion on a Senate primary.
What do you think of Sen. Wyden's Healthy Americans Act?
I think that Ron has done a lot of really smart work in thinking about the issue, and he is somebody I will have at the table as I'm negotiating to bring about a universal health care plan. I have expressed some concerns about the feasibility of shifting so quickly away from the employer-based system to a system in which each individual is responsible for buying their own health care. But I think the idea of portability is one that is important. I'm looking forward to having him as one of the driving forces in the Senate behind getting universal health care.
Any irony that Oregon may put you over the top in the pledged delegate count?
I think it would be wonderful. I don't know how ironic it would be, but I would be thrilled by it happening and I hope it does.
If you had a tattoo, what would it be and where would you put it?
Uh, I cannot imagine any circumstances in which I would get a tattoo.
If you were under duress.
If a gun was put to my head?
Yes.
Then I suppose I'd have to have [his wife] Michelle's name tattooed somewhere very discreet.

Video of WW's interview with Obama:
Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton return to Oregon this weekend.
Obama is far too bright and pragmatic for the American voter. Better to stick with mediocrity, failure and flag-wrapped feel-good politics.
Terrific. I laughed out loud and I am still laughing.
sometimes I really agree with what you wrote here.. but it can really depress you... so you must keep the faith dude..
What an intelligent interview! I'm from Georgia, but to hear anyone asking a candidate about an issue specific to their own state was enlightening. It also proves that some press exists that wants to talk about legitimate issues. And when legitimate issues are discussed, Obama shows just how brilliant he is. It's a shame that so many in this country are willing to settle for mediocrity, but I hope and pray that there are more out there voting who want to see this country move in a better direction than those who want the status quo and are afraid of change.
I have tattoos, but I understand why he wouldn't :P
I can't wait until Hillary is finally out of the picture so we can focus on the general election.
I like his stance on medical marijuana, I very much dislike his reasoning. For a constitutional scholar that's a weak answer. The government has beter things to do? How about federal government has no constitutional authority to supercede a states wishes in the area of drug enforcement. Odd that the justices most likely to overturn Gonzales v. Raich are conservative justices the very type of justice Obama would not select. The liberal justices ruled in favor of the federal government's authority to restrict marijuana use. Scalia concurred but was not part of the majority. If you want Oregon to set it's own marijuana policy a strict constructionist is far more likely to rule in our favor. Just sayin'...
That was an interview? I wish you would have asked Obama how many states there are in the US (he said there are 57) and why he would send Arab translators to Afghanistan (they don't speak Arabic). Tattoo? I wish you would have asked him why he says things like "typical white people". I would have loved to ask when he has been bipartisan and unifying? His record is exactly the opposite. I wish someone would have asked him why he earmarked $1,000,000 to his wife's employers, and she was given a salary boost the next month from $130,000 to $305,000. Couldn't you have asked him about being the lone vote against a sex offender law preventing them from living near schools? Why did his campaign sue to have his senate opponent's child custody court case unsealed -- isn't tha dirty politics? No, I guess not. Wouldn't want the voter to know the truth about Obama. Better going with the fraud of him bringing people together.
Um...Karen, Sen. Obama wasn't being literal when he made the 57 state comment. It's like saying "I've done a million things today".
And as far as sending Arabic translators to Afganistan - You have got to be pretty stupid if you think that our Arabic translators shouldn't be in the country that has Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Ladin (who happens to speak Arabic, of all things). Of course we need them there when we find Al Qaeda documents in Arabic or need to interrogate Al Qaeda operatives that happen to be from Saudi Arabia or other Middle Eastern countries.
He wants to be President and run things at the County level.....Oregonians should just love this marxist....
Rodney quit smoken and start doin son...crazy hippie...
Medical Marijuana is never gonna replace good ole fashion big Pharm, not until they find a way to put it in a pill anyway.
I'm glad to know that you think the most important thing you can ask the potential next president of the United States is what kind of tattoo he wants and where.
You freaking morons.
Remember Daniel Elsberg's psych files? The psychological fitness of a Presidential candidate is very relevant. It is also protected as the candidate's medical privacy, making the subject difficult for voters to assess. I applaud WW for asking the "tattoo question".
Speaking of morons...NOT! McCain's campaign has refused to release his psych records. Even though, as a voter, I'm curious why he was unable to distinguish Sunni from Shia in a recent public appearance. So, I wonder how McCain would answer the "tattoo question"?
Karen, don't you know it's illegal to ask Obama a tough question?
That's a hate crime - you get 15 to 20 years for that stuff.
No opinion on the Senate race? To look at Jeff Merkley's web site, you'd get the idea the Obama had endorsed him.
Speaking of which, what's up with Merkley's "Humane Society" endorsement in is blog ad (right)?
To the woman spewing extreme right wing whacko talking points:
Yes, Obama secured a one million dollar earmark to increase the clinical capacity of a community hospital that serves Chicago's poor. What a monster.
And yes, around the time that Obama was elected to the Senate, his wife was given a promotion. I know it's shocking to think that being the wife of a senator could get you noticed at work.
I guess your other comment is implying that obama is pro-sex offender? Do you have any idea how crazy you sound?
Senator Obama, exactly where do you stand on reparations?
Shawn,
Is it safe to say that because of Obama's close associations with domestic terrorists and pastoral racists that he cannot be trusted as POTUS?
Or does that make me racist?
Racist
Yep. Definately racist. Typical Clintonista.
It makes people who think you are racists complete idiots.
I'm glad you guys used the opportunity to ask some hard hitting questions. The voters were DYING to know Barack's position on tattoos.
Typical WW garbage. Nice job with your six minutes. Got him to spout some crap fed to him by his staff about local issues (do you really think he has any idea what timber payments are?) and asked the oh-so-relevant 00s version of boxers-vs-briefs. Gah. Why not ask him why someone who has never run anything in his life should be in charge of running the trillion-dollar enterprise of the federal government?
i am behind you brett.
hell...if we are going to have an idiot run this country we might as well just leave bush in for the next twenty years...at least he makes me laugh when seeing him try to do anything harder than brushing his teeth.
You had -quite possibly- the future president at your disposal for an interview and you make no mention on anything really important or decisive. Way to go ww. You prove once again what a crap newspaper you are.
Is this a joke? Can the questions be any more worthless? Way to make the Rose City look wonkish like we are and claim to be. What is so ironic about Obama potentially clinching it in Oregon? Glad that Obama shot down WW on about 2/3 of the questions...
Did he call you Sweetie?
This was refreshing and different. I thought WW used its six minutes very well.
GOBAMA!
Wonkette just trashed WW for asking our next president the stoopidest questions.
wonkette.com/390450/sorry-white-tra...
So, what is Obama's favorite color anyway, James?
Yea, this interview is down there with the last ABC debate too. Makes you think there are no relevant issues to run on, like a war... or the economy... or climate change.
I'm glad that Obama has a very reasonable stance on medical marijuana. It is clear that our federal government has other more pressing issues than prosecuting patients and their providers for utilizing a medicine approved by their state. Further, it is clear that more research needs to be conducted since most research has been stifled by the federal government. It will be refreshing to have an administration that bases its policies on science and common-sense.
Bumper sticker down here in the other Oregon: OBAMA NOS. For the first time in decades, there's a tiny sliver of hope, a centimeter of chance, that we might be able to elect a POTUS who might even choose a Green for Secretary of the Interior.
Good idea to piss everyone off with the tat question. It's the kind of thing every voter would get around to asking the candidate, in a one-on-one interview. I'll bet everything down to my last loincloth and emergency refrigerator carton that McCain has a tattoo.
It would be very nice indeed that OREGON shall be the final nail in the coffin ov the Clintonista campaign!
Gosh, questions about timber payments, marijuana, Wyden's health plan, and the Senate race. These are issues that are important to Oregon and don't get asked anywhere else. Should they have went over his Iraq plan for the brazillionth time?
I think the questions are relevant to Oregon. I do wish I could have seen a debate between the two democratic candidates on these local issues and others (which Barrack refused) since it is important to get an idea of how much the candidates are force-fed and memorize information (think Barrack's excruciatingly loooong pauses). I also can't believe you interviewed Hillary in early April and waited to interview Barrack until the Oregon primary is imminent and he's practically throwing celebration parties (how arrogant!). Regardless, anyone with half a brain should take it upon themselves to compare the interviews (wweek.com/editorial/3422/10767/).
Also, Barack grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia not "the South Side," however less cool it is that he was a privileged mixed-race kid raised in a privileged, educated family and a generally less race-conscious culture. Sure, he's been slumming it lately in Chicago but anyone who believes that he hasn't had every opportunity life has to offer is just uninformed. Oh and I think it's fabulous that he doesn't know enough about Oregon or irony to even respond to the WW question. Good job, WW for endorsing a guy who has so little to say of substance, who misrepresents himself as a struggling black man, and who won't give you 10 minutes for an interview! Go WW!
If Hillary did 1/2 as good a job as Bill did for America we might be able to recover from the mess that our Country finds ourselves in. Hillary is the only one who can SAVE AMERICA.
This is Harlem ( NY Ghetto ) after Bill Clinton Grant Money that was properly spent. Its a safe & beautiful area with new condo's, stores, office, Parks, and most importantly JOBS for the local residents.

Educate yourselves because the Media will NOT tell us the truth about Obama because Obama voted for the same Energy Bill as Cheney did. GE will be building Nuclear Power Plants across America with Obama's Blessing. NBC, MSNBC are owned by GE.
So do your own research on OBAMA and you will find out he is dirtier than anyone in DC.
Everyone who truly loves America had better research all the dirt on Obama and there are tons of serious problems out there that the media is refusing to expose.
See if you would want to have someone run your town like Obama ran his small District.
How can he run a Nation if this is what he did to his small District in Chicago.

Maybe it was a Freudian slip? when Obama mistook the U.S.A (50 states) with the OIC (57 Islamic nations. ( take a good look at Obama's face, he truly did NOT know how many states there are in the USA )
Click here: YouTube - Obama Claims He's Visited 57 States
Um...Stock Guy. Show me anything that shows Barack wasn't being literal when he said "57 states." ("It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it.") Also, At a later stop Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he'd also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. He said, "I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh." At that point, an aide cut him off and ushered journalists out. Before he could mis-speak again?) Great, another George W. Bush!
Give me a break. This kind of a gaffe qualifies him to be George W? "Is our children learning", " If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier - so long as I'm the dictator", "The illiteracy level of our children are appalling", "This foreign policy stuff is a little frustrating", "All I can tell you is when the governor calls, I answer his phone" - All from George W.
To characterize Obama's one comment as "another George W. Bush" is grossly unfair.
First off, Hillary is NOT the "Ron Paul" of the Democrats. She is not that far behind! The pressure for her to end the race is suspect at best! Second, the sexism that has pervaded the mainstream media's coverage of Hillary – and ignored by the DNC - is nothing short of astonishing! I'm saddened to be part of a country and party that 1) is unaware of the signs of sexism and/or 2) doesn't care. For example, I've spent months watching Hillary be chastised in the name of "she's a Clinton." I watched as people I thought were educated and progressive adults go along with these statements, utterly unaware how their decision to tie her identity with her husband (i.e. highlighted by those who call her Billary) is, itself, an incredibly sexist statement. This is NOT the 1800s and a woman is NOT defined by her husband. This is one of MANY, many sexist remarks that have emerged during this race that was SUPPOSE to be a historical time for TWO reasons. We're still behind you Hillary & we know "the more experienced choice who is more capable of making change" when we see it. Let our own party force us out. Its far from the first time women (or gays or other pro-female communities) have had to walk our own path. God helps us all.
Damn, If this kid wins I may need have my "Hilary" tattoo removed. It's in a very discrete place, and that could hurt!
Really? You call this journalism? You had 6 minutes with Barack Obama and you ask him about weed and tattoos? Just another example of why the WW is a such worthless paper.
And yes, someone please explain what would be so "ironic" about Oregon putting him "over the top in the pledged delegate count"
" . . . over the long term is to generate more economic growth in these communities."
Oh, I get it . . . replace the Timber Tax with an unspecified plan to out perform all of the entrepuneral talent of all rural Oregon . . . what a leader. This guy is really something different.
Barack is projected to win OR by double-digits tomorrow. Shrillary will win KY, no doubt, but she can HAVE IT! Poor white trash serves as the Clintonista base, just take a look at her supporters in W.Virgina: www.livesteez.com/videos/watch/nvYk...
In my whole life, I've never been prouder to be an Oregonian. And I'm not even registered for the primary. Saving it for the November election, assuming that it isn't postponed due to a national emergency. I'll vote Obama. If Hillary is VP, I'll vote twice. Or vice versa. If both survive the Republican response and survive, I'll vote and persuade others to vote.
This is going to be an interesting year, 2008.
Women versus African-Americans! Are we REALLY surprised we’ve arrived to this level of analysis? I, for one (as a liberal white man), stand by my sisters. If you review the website for the leading organization for women (National Organization of Women) you CLEARLY see their choices to fight not only for women’s rights, but the rights of African-Americans, gay people, etc (the sections are easily seen and identified). If you visit the leading African American organization’s website (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) you do NOT find clear choices that support women’s rights, gay rights, etc. Their subsections speak of youth, education, etc. but they don’t seem to care for women or gays (not even black women or gays). The choice, while quite regrettable, is simply clear…women simply appear to more broadly fight for a range of oppressed peoples while the leading African Americans have not. As a pastor who cares about ALL people (and especially all people suffering from oppression) I must stand by the one who represent the hopes and dreams of women…and all oppressed peoples. I stand by Hillary…Hillary for President for ’08! May God be with us all during this difficult time of discernment.
What's very disturbing is your racist generalization of American American civil rights contributions. The very same institutions and struggles that White gays use as a model for justifying white gay civil rights. What an awful racist you are.
So, because Obama is of mixed race - - which just about all of us are, by the way - - happening to be of African descent, that disqualifies him from having the ability to care for folks of every walk of life? What sort of reasoning do you have to make this claim, besides rash generalizations? Which, last I heard, was a form of racism. Stop masquerading as someone who cares for others when you judge someone based upon their race; shame on you.
Wow. I continue to be amazed at the sheer stupidity of senator Obama. His responses are obviously rehearsed, straight out of the far-left liberal whacko playbook, and he knows less about actual politics in practice than my granny. Granny for president!

Barack is a very intellegent person. And I beleive that he will take this country to the next level in securing that the war comes to an end, families will have restored faith in their Government to provide them with jobs and healthcare. I'm so glad that he has been a role model to kids everywhere that no matter what others may say of you, you can become ANYTHING in life if you work hard. This man came from a single mother, on food stamps, to running for the highest job in this country. He has the intellegence, temperment, and the gracefullness that I think a president should have.
He doesn't make statements like Hillary saying he has all of the African Americans vote(refering to her comment to USA Today) that divides us.. but instead he talks about what brings us together, and the values that we all share. He is not just a "black candidate" ... because infact he was raised by ONLY WHITE PEOPLE! But he is an American Candidate, because he loves this country, and it shows in how he has organized his campagin to include all people, and not just one demographic. He is what America needs today!
