China is here, fellow Portlanders.

The Olympics kick off in Beijing this week, but we’ve got a trio of local medal-worthy events you can root for guilt-free.

WEDNESDAY AUG. 6

[SCREEN] PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Indie auteur David Gordon Green is seduced into Planet Apatow for a stoner comedy. Maybe because it’s a stoner comedy, the results are blissful. Area theaters.

[MUSIC] STRATEGY + SOLENOID, CLOUDBURST, MAP-MAP, JETFINGER

The combo of four of the most inspiring voices in our electronic music scene is exciting enough. Plus, it’ll be a surround-sound experience, with a multichannel six-speaker system ready to immerse the audience in rushes of sine waves and fractured beats. Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison St., 239-7639. 9 pm. $5. 21+.

[AWESOME] THE FAMOUS MYSTERIOUS ACTOR SHOW

The talk-show parody Famous Mysterious Actor Show features sexually explicit rants, a deranged host costumed in a Mexican wrestling mask and, this month, Boy Eats Drum Machine and local hip-hop duo the Chicharones. Berbati’s Pan, 231 SW Ankeny St., 248-4579. 9 pm. $8. All ages.

[SCREEN] MAN ON WIRE

A documentary about Philippe Petit’s highwire conquest of the World Trade Center portrays it as a kind of inverted terrorism whose awesomeness affirms instead of destroys life. Fox Tower, 846 SW Park Ave., 221-3280. $7-$10.

[MUSIC] PORTLAND CELLO PROJECT CD RELEASE

At this rate, Portland should be as famous for cellos as for bikes and brews. This fascinating lineup of eight to 16 cellists covers anything from Bach to Zep, Beethoven to Britney. Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave., 233-1994. 8 pm. $13 advance, $15 day of show. All ages.

SATURDAY AUG. 9

[MUSIC] ZS, EAT SKULL, THE VANISHING KIDS

Brooklyn proglodytes Zs make rock music so complex that they have to read it off sheet music. This is the far-out stuff that skronks like jazz and skips like an old record. Rotture, 315 SE 3rd Ave., 234-5683. 9 pm. $7. 21+.

SUNDAY AUG. 10

[PETS] DOVE35

Animal hospital extraordinaire DoveLewis celebrates 35 years of helpin’ PDX’s best friends with a mega “custom art” party in Pioneer Square. Pioneer Courthouse Square, Southwest Broadway and Morrison Street. 4 pm. Free. Visit dove35.com for details.
