While reading WW’s article on trail running [“Run, Forest, Run,” July 1, 2009], I was disappointed that the one thing you neglected to warn runners to “watch out for” was the most obvious: hikers. You were right to describe trail running as “hiking’s badass older sister,” since trail runners are rapidly becoming the bullies of Portland’s hiking trails. Gone are the days where one can escape the city with a quiet stroll in the stillness of nature without someone shouting “on your left!” every minute or so.

These days I’m usually hiking with my two young sons who are starting to find the woods stressful because of Dad’s constant warning to get off the trail because someone is bearing down on us at full-bore. Failure to do so had led to many near collisions or sometimes even a snide “exCUSE me” comment as the runners pass. Please, runners, make one of your weekly workouts a hike so you can enjoy the slow pace and experience firsthand the plight of the beleaguered Portland hiker.

Correction:
Last week’s “The Good, the Bad, the Awful” cover story incorrectly stated Rep. Suzanne VanOrman’s party affiliation. She is a Democrat. And the story erred in writing that Rep. Carolyn Tomei chaired a committee for the first time in 2009. In fact, she chaired the House Human Services and Women’s Wellness Committee in 2007. WW regrets the errors.

Clarification:
After last week’s cover story went to press, two bills co-sponsored by Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-Portland)—HB 2500, relating to government accountability, and HB 3369, relating to water management—did in fact pass.
