St. Johns residents say Jon Herweck, a transient known in the area as “Rabbit,” saved a Pomeranian dog from a house fire Oct. 14. Herwick says he kicked down the front door after he saw smoke billowing from the roof and the dog came out.

An 11-year-old girl watched a man steal her bike from her backyard Oct. 16. Isabel Weston was getting ready to leave for school that morning when the man, described as about 40 years old and weighing 220 pounds, used a bolt cutter to snap off the bike’s padlock.

Nicholas Ungar Furs owner Horst Grimm has taken a new tack against a group of fur protesters who have been demonstrating outside his store since January. The 75-year-old Grimm got a restraining order against four of the protesters, saying they were abusing him because of his age.

Lana Sviridiuk says a man came into the Church of Grace on Oct. 15 and stole her purse, which contained $900 in donation money from the church for blankets and other goods to help children during her next missionary trip to India.

Oprah gave Lisa Cicoria the inspiration to fight back when a man tried to kidnap Cicoria and her 2-year-old son at a KinderCare Learning Center parking lot Oct. 16. Remembering advice from an Oprah episode that told women never to let attackers take them to a second location, Cicoria fought back until the man gave up and fled the scene.
