Neighborhood: Old Town/Chinatown

Old Town-Chinatown achieves a balance rare in Portland neighborhoods, retaining elements from bygone Portland but mixing in stylish, modern amenities. (read more) Some of the city’s best walking blocks are here. An afternoon stroll is always an excuse for the dumplings and delicacies of dim sum at Fong Chong (301 NW 4th Ave., 228-6868). Later, stop in for retro video games at Ground Kontrol (511 NW Couch St., 796-9364, groundkontrol.com), which recently hosted a pinball tournament attended by former NBA center Todd MacCulloch. At the ’hood’s eastern edge, near the waterfront, the Oregon Maritime Museum (115 SW Ash St., 224-7724, oregonmaritimemuseum.org)—so legit it’s actually inside a steam-powered sternwheeler—offers local shipyard history and the chance for kids to (almost) discover what it’s like to be out at sea. The White Stag building (70 NW Couch St.), built in 1907 and former home to Norcrest China Co. and the White Stag sportswear line, has been gutted and taken over by the University of Oregon. One of the few sites in the country that is both LEED certified and on the National Register of Historic Places, it now hosts journalism and architecture classes. If all the walking tires you out, hop on one of the PDX Pedicab tours that start in Old Town ($15, 733-4222, pdxpedicab.com). —Michael Mannheimer

Bartender’s choice: I’m sure my bartender said something funny, but it’s so damn loud in here!

Ah, Berbati’s Pan, the Costco of downtown bars! What looks like a big box form the outside, though, usually amounts to a solid night out (hints of Greek and nautical themes successfully distract from the building’s generally clumsy architecture). If your money is gone after a night at Berbati’s, the venue’s very serious pool and pinball sharks are the most likely culprit, not its reasonably priced Greek menu or suitably stiff mixed drinks. On live-music evenings (and most of them are), one can jump back and forth between a great show and a great conversation on the two distinctive sides of the club. Or you can just get drunk and watch ’80s music videos on the huge projection screen. HAPPY HOUR, DJ, LIVE MUSIC, FOOD/DRINK SPECIALS, OUTDOOR SEATING, TV, VIDEO POKER, GAMES. (CJ)

That 1 Guy & The Magic Pipe

[PIPE BOMB] Mike Silverman, better known by nom de tube “That 1 Guy,” is a musical jester whose combined knowledge of MIDI triggers and plumbing have transformed him from a carbon copy of Les Claypool into an eyebrow-raising sonic oddity. By mating a PVC pipe with one-fourth of a stand-up bass and a mess of MIDI triggers, Silverman has created a hydra-headed beast (the “Magic Pipe”) that assists him in producing jaunty beats and the almost humorous jokes that he sings over them. Like the best oddities, Silverman is 100 percent committed to his conceit, and it makes for a solid distraction. He still hasn't released anything since 2007's The Moon Is Disgusting, but let's be real: This is music you have to see live to believe. SHANE DANAHER. Berbati's Pan 8:30 pm. $12.50 advance, $15 day of show. All ages.
