Wendy Franklund-Miller.
Augen Gallery The idea of the frame goes beyond the utilitarian. We contextualize issues, wars and entire lives with the construct of the framing device; the “three walls” of a stage play frame drama and comedy, as does the letterbox of a film. Spokane artist Wendy Franklund-Miller seems to sense this in her ode to the frame at Augen’s downtown gallery. Her wax-covered frames have no subject matter other than their own encaustic surfaces, which often combine muted and bright colors to pleasing effect. Read whatever you want into these ciphers; they accommodate all realities and fantasies. By contrast, Miller’s more prosaic Red Bull series, which combines semi-abstract imagery with a linear sensibility, offers more for the eye but less for the mind. 817 SW 2nd Ave., 224-8182. Closes Aug. 30.
