CONGRATULATIONS TO US!

Willamette Week's coverage of the debate over doctor-assisted suicide earned first-place honors at the 1998 Association of Alternative Newspaper Editorial Awards last week in Washington, D.C. "To Lie For," David Smigelski's account of how opponents of assisted suicide exploited The Oregonian's sloppy reporting, won first place in the Media Reporting competition. Judges said, "Smigelski wrote a detailed, thoughtful article on the ways in which an incompletely reported news story can be manipulated and distorted for political ends."

In addition, WW won second place in the Editorial Layout competition, for Katherine Topaz's design of "The Legacy of 'Lil Smurf.'" Judges cited an "excellent consistency to the design, making it very easy for the reader to follow the flow of the story without getting lost in the sea of competing material."
