Eyes may be the windows to the soul, but a woman's purse,
too, allows a peek into her personality.
There's the sloppy satchel type (think Ally Sheedy's character
in The Breakfast Club), the baguette-carrying fashion
victim (Gwyneth, perhaps), the military bag boho (look no
further than Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard) and the Coach
classic (working girl). But the bags themselves are somewhat
superficial. Their contents, on the other hand--the items
not intended for public display--are infinitely more revealing.
Seattle's Carol Steele, Northwest fashion director for
Nordstrom, agreed to let me dissect the massive black tote
(actually a cosmetics bag for makeup artists) that she hauls
with her on business trips. No, I didn't unearth any deep,
dark secrets (or even a spare tampon, which she admitted
taking out of the bag moments before the dissection). But
I did catch a glimpse into the fashionable, yet practical,
lifestyle of this frequent flyer. (Can this gargantuan thing
even pass for a carry-on?)
The gracious, high-energy Steele didn't even mind my digging;
instead, she dumped the contents on the floor enthusiastically
and insisted I try some of her Kiehl's lip balm. And, despite
the bountiful array of goods she totes around ("I just have
a mobile me, my mobile life," she explains), her philosophy
is relatively simple: "As long as you have a little cash
and all your cosmetics, you'll be fine."
High maintenance or highly
practical? You decide.
* zebra-striped small purse:to stash a few necessities
whenever she can leave the big bag behind at the hotel
* black cosmetics pouches: "I heard you're supposed to
choose different-colored cosmetic bags so you can just reach
in your bag and find them more easily, but..."
* an array of Bobbi Brown cosmetics
* Estee Lauder concealer
* Kiehl's iced melon lip gloss: "I like to use these really
light lipsticks, then coat them with high-colored glosses."
* various lipsticks
* Maybelline Great Lash mascara
* a handful of other makeup items
* Trish McEvoy coral nail polish
* iridescent pink nail polish: "I carry one nail color
for toes, one for fingers."
* long-handled makeup brushes
* a tiny bottle of Noa perfume: "I like those little perfume
samples they give you at the cosmetic counter because they're
so portable."
* black travel pouch from Nordstrom (for receipts, bills
and plane tickets)
* loose plane tickets
* Lexus keys
* soy protein bar: "These are heavenly. You never know
if you're going to get breakfast or not."
* voicemail card: "I never have figured out how to use
that."
* pair of black flats: "I always carry them. A girl has
to have a pair of flat shoes to run to the airport."
* roll of film to be processed:
"It's eight months old. I have no idea what's on it."
* envelope of snapshots: "Photos of my daughter's graduation
and a dinner party that I had some time ago. The film rolled
around in the bottom of my bag for about two months."
* cell phone
* wallet with her daughters' prom photos inside
* lint brush: "I wear black a lot of the time and my blonde
hair gets all over everything--not a good look!"
* two hairbrushes: "In the morning, you just start throwing
stuff in, and sometimes you end up with duplicates."
* two pairs of reading glasses (see above)
* Ginseng Blast supplement packet: "My husband always brings
me little funny things home; this one I am sure was from
the counter at a convenience store! I have a boat load of
energy...and I have never had a cup of coffee in my life."
* gum and mints: "Almost as important as lipstick!"
