Brandied
About
Once the dishes have been thrown in the sink
and the dinner scraps consigned to Tupperware, it's time
to get out the snifters. Though there are a number of
fine brandies to partake of, one local one, Clear Creek
Distillery's Grappa, is one of the lightest and most
satisfying. It's perfect for added warmth ($39.95 for
a fifth, available at most liquor stores).
Gone Fishin'
Caviar is the perfect appetizer.
Of the three sturgeon varieties of caviar, Sevruga is
the most affordable at $35 an ounce. Going further upmarket,
one finds the much-sought-after Beluga at $52 an ounce
(Strohecker's Inc., 2855 SW Patton Road, 223-7391).
The Good Stuff
In Italy, it's not unusual to find
little old men sipping very old vinegar from tiny cups.
No, they aren't trying to save a bad batch of wine; that's
aged balsamic vinegar. Pier Luigi Sereni's Traditional
Modena Balsamic Vinegar ($144, aged over 25 years; $70
for the 12-year-old, at Pastaworks, 3731 SE Hawthorne
Blvd., 232-1010; 735 NW 21st. Ave., 221-3002) comes in
fancy gift boxes and is aged in a series of wooden casks.
Sweet and syrupy, this stuff is for the ultra-refined
palate.
Addictively good
Long outlawed for its addictiveness, absinthe is back
with a vengeance, and bars are running out in Europe again
from Prague to Edinburgh. There's currently one brand
available here that bears the rather telling name of Absente
("absent" in French), though this is a more refined liquor
lacking many of raw absinthe's charms ($38.95 for gift
box set, including glass and straining spoon, available
at most liquor stores).
Naked Decadence
The perfect accompaniment with
the coffee and nog is an assortment of Godiva Chocolatier
Truffles. The attractive box contains some of the
best of Godiva's rich sweets, with coconut, espresso,
vanilla, hazelnut and pecan truffles, as well as a selection
of berry truffles. This truffle collection costs $44 (Godiva
Chocolatier, Pioneer Place, 340 SW Morrison St., 226-4722).
Stuff This
People love to snort and chow their
way through the holidays. How about giving the object
of your affections a real chance to pig out by buying
a piece of--or a whole--roasted pig! The folks at City
Market's meat counter roast up a Tuscan-style Porchetta
pig (Viande Meats and Sausages, 735 NW 21st Ave.,
221-3012). You can pre-order a piece at $8.95 per pound,
or order a whole one for around $300-$350.
