Cheap Thrills
When it comes to buying jewelry for a finicky teen lass,
eschew the fancy-shmancy stuff (she'll be over it in a week)
for a fun and furry bracelet ($3, Presents of Mind,
3633 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 230-7740). The hard plastic snaps
smartly around the wrist, sans fasteners, and the electric-colored
fuzzy loop (in lime, fuchsia, orange and others) is reminiscent
of those cute little troll pencil tops with the crazy hair.
Matching rings are available, too ($1.50).
Hip to the Tip
Top off your winter wardrobe with a furry hat ($34,
The Limited, 951 Lloyd Center, 249-8788, various locations).
Warm enough to wear to a chilly snowball fight, it also
sports enough style to be worn to the swankiest shindig
in town. Available in brown or black faux fur (the brown
version is a multi-hued longhair, while the black one is
made of shorter stuff--and both are playfully tall with
a tiny brim).
It keeps going and going...
Party wear that doubles as everyday wear is the best kind.
Take, for example, a silver A-line rayon skirt and
nylon/Spandex turtleneck in burgundy, cobalt or gray-green
($16 and $18, Forever 21, Pioneer Place, 340 SW Morrison
St., 241-0488). Both pieces are festive enough for a New
Year's Eve bash, yet subdued enough to wear well into 2001.
The cut of the skirt is simply flattering and the fitted
shirt tops off a pair of jeans just fine. Best of all, this
stuff is really cheap.
Wrap It Up
Who wants to wrap up in one more boring scarf this season,
especially when there's a better alternative? No, we're
not talking about pashmina. The body scarf ($55,
Imelda's Designer Shoes, 1431 SE 37th Ave., 233-7476) may
look like a shaggy chenille scarf from afar, but it's actually
a long tube that morphs into a shrug--with or without a
hood. This makes it ideal for keeping exposed shoulders
warm when worn over a strapless party dress. (Supposedly,
the scarf can also be worn as a dress, but we have yet to
witness this stylin' interpretation.)
Seven Dwarves Not Included
Any teenage girl with a ritzy party or winter social ahead
would feel just like Snow White in Lena Medoyeff's empire-waist
mirrored dress ($286, Lena Medoyeff Studio, 3200B SE
Hawthorne Blvd., 230-7259). The local designer always chooses
exquisite fabrics for her very wearable designs, and this
one has tiny mirrors hand-sewn on creme fabric. The pretty
garment is lined, has spaghetti straps and hits below the
knee.
Going in Circles
Halters are hot, even when it's cold. The silky Melissa
M. Fellini dot halter ($54, Retread Threads, 931 SW
Oak St., 916-0000) is smokin'! Covered in big red dots,
this low-back number features ties at the neck and waist
that can be done up loose or tight depending on your mood.
The matching skirt, or a black suede version, adds polish.
Kiss on My List
It's slicker and less serious than ladylike lipstick, but
still has a shimmery finish and a touch of natural color
to dress up party-bound lips. It's Lover Lips gloss ($12,
Nordstrom, 701 SW Broadway, 224-6666, various locations).
And it's just one of the items in the Girl Cosmetics
product line, which puts the accent on glitter, shine and
fun. Leave it to the company's director, Shawn Haynes (he's
the bro of Velvet Goldmine director Todd Haynes),
to create the sparkly stuff, some of which was inspired
by his brother's very own movie.
