KIDS
mcmenamins on broadway
Though lacking the usual McMenamins architectural style--it's nestled over a CD store and Starbucks--this Northeast Broadway location maintains the brothers' tradition. Kids are welcome between 11 am and 10 pm, and the menu caters to them with such standbys as PB&J ($2.50), pasta ($3.50) and $2 pizza bread that puts similar school cafeteria offerings to shame. (Heck, if you sit in the atrium-like space by the staircase, the little ones might even feel like they're
in the dining hall of a fancy liberal arts college.) As for the grown-ups, there are plenty of taps pouring faves both old and new, notably Raccoon Red, a slightly sweet mouth filler; the strongly coffee-flavored Portside Porter; or the Golden Delicious IPA, with more hops than a dancer at a Dead show. McMenamins on Broadway, 1504 NE Broadway, suite 900, 288-9498. Open daily. 28 taps.

mickey finn's brewpub
Remember back in the '80s when everything suddenly became bigger? The Texan ethos spread nationwide, and houses, portions, salaries and prices grew. Mickey Finn's brings you back to those days of expansion. It begins with the room itself, bigger on the inside than it looks from the street, with extra-long booths against the walls and oak tables and chairs in the center tailored to the needs of professional basketball players. With your legs dangling and swinging from the booth bench, you'll feel like Alice in Wonderland, which is precisely why kids enjoy this place so much. Not to mention that they're actually welcome here and given lots of play room. Do heed the posted notice, "Children left unattended will be sold as slaves." The wide beer selection includes two brews on cask and three nitro. The menu features lots of--you guessed it--big plates for passing around the table (be sure to stretch first) including steamer clams in Oregon Honey Beer for $8.95. (RR)

4336 SE Woodstock Blvd., 788-1587. Open daily. 28 taps.

silver dollar pizza co.
Although it's a huge step up from Domino's, the Silver Dollar looks more like it should be in downtown Coos Bay than on Northwest 21st Avenue. Kids, attracted to the blinking lights, have plenty
of space to run around and can amuse themselves by interrupting pool games. Ordering at the counter adds to the casual, it's-OK-to-spill vibe. The Dollar's flagship pizza is the Six Shooter Combo, topped with pepperoni, salami, onions, mushrooms, sausage, black olives and tomatoes. Eight microbrews, including Full Sail IPA and Mirror Pond, are available to amuse parents. Wednesday night pool tournaments cost $3 to enter, and winners get cash prizes. (IR)

501 NW 21st Ave., 227-1103. Open daily. 18 taps.
