At Willamette Week, we start getting ready for the
sun well before the delicious scent of meat over hot coals
permeates the sidewalks. For this year's Summer Guide, we
dreamed up 99 things (we're obliged to make at least a little
nod to the millennium) you can do at a moment's notice. Things
that signify summer. Things to do in Portland when it's not
raining. Things that don't require a lot of equipment, money
or time--because we're just as busy as you are.
Though you may not have two weeks of vacation this summer,
you will have many hours of extra daylight to fill. Take
advantage of them. Find a pick-up game of hoops. Take your
aggression out at the batting cages. Grill some vegetables.
Play croquet. Go to the zoo. Get a pedicure. Grab a hammock
and a good book and relax.
And when you do have a few free days, get out and explore.
Climb a mountain in the gorge, then get some culture at
the picturesque Maryhill Museum of Art. Drive down the coast
to ogle sea lions and frolic on a giant sand dune. Ride
the alpine slide at Ski Bowl, then ski at Timberline. Take
a dusty ride through the desert, then revive yourself at
Crater Lake.
Or sit around and bitch about your sunburn, decry the trampled
grass at Waterfront Park and moan about boredom. Just don't
come crying to us when you could be out reveling in the
Summer of '99.
