Dear Suey,
I'm 32, just out of divorce court, and dating a guy who knows how to make me laugh (and I mean that in a good way). He's totally open to life and quite the stud muffin. Only problem is, he's 25. Some of my friends are warning me about the age difference. Is there something wrong with what I'm doing?

--Old Enough to Be His Babysitter

Dear OE, No, there isn't. As long as you can tolerate the look of his vacant, innocent eyes when you start talking about Get Smart reruns and Luke and Laura's affair on General Hospital, then it's really not anybody else's business.

--Suey

Dear Ms. Chow,
Since I am looking back from the perspective of 50, I find a lot of the questions that people send in to range from sad (they still don't know) to mildly amusing in a "Dear Abby" sort of way.

You would be doing your readers a favor if you shared with them that despite the myriad website "dating/marriage" locations, the numerous "dating/marriage" businesses, and of course the weekly personals in many newspapers, that reality does not change.

The reality is that in America, between 50 percent and 75 percent of all marriages fail, depending on a variety of factors. At a minimum, 75 percent of all relationships fail within two years or less. The casualty rate out there in the Real World is so high that currently 25 percent or more of all men and women, be they straight, gay or bi, have made conscious decisions never to date again and have accepted that they will spend the rest of their lives alone.

I chalk up the rather extreme naivete of many of your readers to youth and dirt-poor educations, both in academics and in Life 101. Come on, be a class act, Ms. Chow, for god's sake, tell your young, foolish, "stars in their eyes" naïve kid/adult readers what the Reality is.

--Samuel Johnson Was Right

Dear Sam,
The hoary old 50-percent failure rate is a miscalculation. Back in the dark ages of sociology (the 70's), someone divided the number of divorces by the number of marriages in the same year and then assumed that 50% of all marriages would end in divorce. But that's a little like noticing that the number of births was higher than deaths last year and deciding that some people will live forever.

No level-headed organization has bothered to reliably estimate how many marriages will end in broken vows instead of the seemingly preferred finality of death (What about the axe murderers? What about the hangers-on from before no-fault divorce? Who's going to review the records of every courthouse in the United States?). But if you like playing by the numbers, the Census Bureau counts about 19.4 million adults, or 9.8 percent of the adult population, as currently divorced in 1998. The more often quoted figure comes from the Center for Disease Control, which estimates that 2 percent of all existing marriages ended in 1990. FYI, this yearly divorce rate was down from 1980 levels in most regions except the South (on the West Coast, the rate went down by about 19 percent).

Still, it's difficult to measure relationship success this way, if only because not everyone wants to get (or stay) married. Some just want a decent breakup, a better relationship with the ex, a chance to hang out with the cool kids at the office-supply superstore. The urge to get along with others is deeply ingrained, and sometimes this leads to wild makeout sessions in front of a Vegas chapel followed six months later by a shotgun divorce. Is this true happiness? Some might argue it's close enough.

Your favorite cynic, Samuel Johnson, once quipped that second marriages are "the triumph of hope over experience." But which of the two, hope or experience, did he personally recommend?
