Men's Fashion

Tied and True
Giving him a tie may sound uninspired, but when it's a
hip, one-of-a-kind vintage tie ($8 and up, Avalon
Antiques, 203 SW 9th Ave., 224-7156) I promise he won't
bury it in a drawer--or drop it off at Goodwill when the
opportunity arises. Avalon vintage experts Arthur and Barbara
can help you choose among myriad styles from the '30s through
the '50s. Hand-painted, silkscreened and deco print styles
(they even have Peek-a-Boo nudie ties!) are among the treasure
trove of neckwear found here.
It's All About the Booty
Imelda's--that drool-worthy Hawthorne District shoe shop--has
just picked up the BCBG line of men's shoes, including the
BCBG Cam leather ankle boot ($158, Imelda's Designer
Shoes, 1431 SE 37th Ave., 233-7476). The hidden eyelets
(a popular trend this year) lend a streamlined look to this
very versatile shoe. It's the perfect step up from the average
black work boot and a bit dressier and infinitely cooler
than Dad's wingtips.
A Healthy, Lustrous Coat
A high-quality leather coat is as practical as it gets
for the well-dressed man, and a Reilly Olmes hip-length
leather jacket ($425, Nordstrom, 701 SW Broadway,
224-6666, and various locations) fits the bill quite nicely.
(See photo on next page.)
Hugh Who?
Ready to host a party just for two? Silk black pajamas
($129.90, Saks Fifth Avenue, 850 SW 5th Ave., 226-3200)
are the perfect attire for such an occasion. The style they
have at SFA's men's store has a distinguished, subtle paisley
print and an elastic waist with a button and drawstring.
These PJ's even come with extra buttons, just in case your
party gets a little out of hand.
Flying the Flannel
Men always gain a few points on the "nice butt" meter when
they're wearing a pair of flat-front Dawson stretch flannel
pants ($88, Banana Republic, 710 SW Yamhill St.,
274-7963, and various locations). Besides looking great,
that innovative stretchy stuff is comfortable and holds
its shape well. Available in neutral light gray, charcoal
and olive, these are the must-have pants this season. BR's
black leather belt with burnished silver military buckle
($30) complements them perfectly.
Velvet Goldmine
For the young man who doesn't take his parties too seriously,
consider a '70s velvet jacket ($20-$45, Magpie, 520
SW 9th Ave., 220-0920). It's hipper and has a better sense
of humor than your basic sport coat, without being silly
in a frilly, Austin Powers sort of way--unless paired with
giant teeth and ruffled shirts.
'Cuff Him!
French-style cuffs are making a big comeback, but they're
hard to find even in vintage shops. Designer Nicole Miller
answers that call with her very first men's shirt line.
Nicole Miller's men's solid button-down shirt with French
cuffs ($78, Poker Face, 128 SW 3rd Ave., 294-0445) is
available in burnt orange, lavender and eggplant. But don't
stop there. Spoil your man by throwing in a pair of Paul
Smith cuff links ($60-$120, Poker Face) featuring colorful
designs on hand-painted enamel and unique crystal and silver
styles.
