Gentle Readers,
When Heart Day beckons, Miss Dish is inundated with requests
for suggestions on where to dine that's romantic and right.
So, here are Missy D's Valentine's tips.
1. Mother's
409 SW 2nd Ave., 464-1122.
This homey new spot, which shot into buzz country within
weeks of opening, borders on Oedipalville. Maternal fixations
notwithstanding, it's a wonderful place to grab a bite with
your honey. The menu features homestyle recipes, and each
month the restaurant highlights a real mother's real recipes.
Bring your mother or bring your kids or just go for the
matzo ball soup (it's an aphrodisiac!) if you want a reasonably
priced meal without all the usual bells and whistles of
San Valentino's day.
2. The Heathman
1001 SW Broadway, 790-7752.
You want bells and whistles? This is the place. The honorable
and very French executive chef Philippe Boulot has whipped
up a special four-course prix fixe menu for $55 per
person. Live music courtesy of the jazzy Mary Kadderly plays
as you choose from such entrees as pomegranate-glazed pheasant
with fruit chutney and beef Wellington with a bordelaise
sauce. Make sure you really like the person you're with
for this one.
3. Oritalia
750 SW Alder St., 295-0680.
For players only. The swankiest restaurant in town offers
a "velvet curtain dinner." Those with $80 per person to
spend slip behind a velvet curtain and dine in a private
booth equipped with a "beck and call light." Diners receive
a flowering orchid and a six-course meal. This deal runs
from Saturday, Feb. 12, through Valentine's Day.
4. Original Portland Ice Cream Parlor
1613 NE Weidler St., 281-1271.
Now, back to reality. What is love really? An excuse to
act silly. Formerly Farrell's, the parlor is mainly known
as a place for kiddie birthday parties. Hoopla ensues when
the soda jerks attack en masse with birthday songs and huge
sundaes. Tell them that you're twins and it's your birthday,
or just tell them that you're in love; they're likely to
do the same song and dance for you.
5. Ken's Homeplate
1852 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 236-9520.
Ken's isn't open on Monday, Valentine's Day, but grab your
honey and get real comfortable on Saturday night. Slippers,
pillows and tapes of Sopranos episodes all play a
part. Pick up the phone and give Ken a call. If you live
in on the east side between Burnside Street, Powell Boulevard,
the Willamette River and 39th Avenue, you can get any number
of Ken's luscious home-cooked goods delivered. We're talking
flaky salmon strudel, hearty Tuscan meatloaf and fresh spinach
lasagna. Eat in bed and don't worry about the crumbs.
