This week's Rogue is retired investment banker Jim Hansen,
a candidate in the Republican primary for House District
24.
Hansen is running on a platform of honesty, but a recent
flier suggests that this commodity is in short supply over
at his own campaign headquarters.
Hansen's flier boasts of his endorsement by several local
papers, including The Oregonian. "Jim Hansen is quick,
smart, and enthusiastic... voters in House District 24 should
give him a chance to go to work."
Huh? In fact, on April 12, The Oregonian
endorsed his rival, Marilyn Schultz, in the Republican primary
for the district.
A closer look at Hansen's flier shows that the Big O's
endorsement is actually two years old, from his 1998 primary
race against Stan Ash.
To his credit, Hansen admits the flier was misleading and
takes the blame. "The way this looks, it's dishonest," he
says. "It doesn't meet my threshold. It's my fault, period."
Hansen says the screw-up occurred because he did not review
the flier before mailing it out to 9,300 Republicans in
the district, which includes Lake Oswego and Tualatin. (A
similar ad appeared in the Lake Oswego Review.) He
says he will mail out corrected fliers this week.
Ironically, Hansen knows full well what it's like to square
off against an opponent who plays fast and loose with the
facts. In the final week of the 1998 Republican primary,
rival Ash circulated fliers distorting Hansen's view on
drugs, saying he advocated legalizing heroin and cocaine.
Hansen lost the primary by less than 200 votes.
