WINNERS
1. New county commissioners Serena Cruz and
Lisa Naito won their showdown with Sheriff Dan Noelle,
who finally agreed to site drug- and alcohol-treatment beds
and a new North Portland jail on the same property.
2. Millionaire landlord Harold Schnitzer
got what he wanted from a revised low-income housing bill
in Salem. Memo to city commissioners: Don't cross wits with
the Schnitz.
3. Animal lovers plan to give unwanted pets
a new leash on life in the Wild West ghost town of Millican.
But can the kitties break the town's curse? Quick, call
Steven King.

LOSERS
1. The gun lobby seemed to score a coup last
week when the House sent proposed gun-show regulations back
to committee. But the vote was close, and public opinion
is against the lobby. Sen. Ginny Burdick has vowed to gut
all compromises to the NRA out of the bill.
2. Sure, it's catty, but someone's got to say it.
The Oregonian's new design has not been kind to Margie
Boulé. First, she gets left out of the O's
promos for its five other (male) columnists, and then there's
the updated column photo...
3. Moviegoers are going to have to scrounge for
a few more quarters these days. Last Friday, McMenamins
theaters doubled their admission price to $2. On the same
day, Regal Cinemas bumped admission prices at several venues.
