WINNERS
1. KOIN-TV will get to broadcast Game 2 of
the Blazers-Jazz series Thursday night. That's because KGW,
the official Blazers station, is under NBC network orders
to air a pair of season finales. Hey, that's what Friends
are for.
2. Pedal power got Metro to pull a U-turn. Led by
architect Phil Goff, bicyclists recently protested
Metro's decision not to finance a permanent bike lane on
the Morrison Bridge. Last week, Metro honchos backpedaled,
offering up $100,000 to launch engineering studies.
3. Last week, Oregon heteros who really believe
that "till death do us part" biz got a blessing from the
state Senate, which passed the Covenant Marriage Act. The
optional covenant marriages would allow couples to divorce
only in severe cases, such as those involving adultery,
abandonment or abuse.

LOSERS
1. Last week, the U.S. Air Force issued a
revised investigation report officially blaming the King-56
crew for the fatal crash. But the media focused on the news
that the chief investigator, Major Gen. Bobby Floyd, has
taken a $145,000-a-year job with Lockheed, the manufacturer
of King-56. Even worse, Floyd admitted to negotiating with
Lockheed while he was investigating the crash, which some
blame on flaws in the aircraft.
2. Taxpayers accustomed to their annual fiscal
kicks got bad news last week from state revenue forecasters,
who say the "overpayment" of income taxes this year may
not be enough to trigger the state's kicker.
3. Republican state Rep. Bill Witt, of the
west suburbs, lost ground with seniors after suggesting
that $40 would cover an elderly couple's grocery bills for
a week. Hey, Bill: Ketchup's not a vegetable, either.
