Winners

1. Musicians are used to groupies ogling their instruments, but it's not every day that the president asks to check out your horn. Saxophonist Danny Schauffler was happy to oblige Bill Clinton, who was groovin' to the tunes of Dale Van Wormer at last week's fund-raising gig for U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley.

2. Local pound puppies are getting a boost from the cocktail crowd. Last week the Oregon Humane Society, hoping to build a new shelter in Portland, announced a fund-raising campaign: It gets $3 every time someone orders a $4 "Unconditional Love" drink at participating bars this month. The campaign is sponsored by Skyy Vodka and its local distributor, McClaskey's.

3. Oregonian reporters cleaned up in the Best of West journalism competition, winning 10 of the 79 awards given to print reporters in 13 Western states. First-place winners included Jonathan Brinckman (environmental reporting), Peter Sleeth and Foster Church (growth reporting), David Reinhard (editorial writing) and Steve Cowden (graphics and illustration). KPTV won three awards in the television category, including first-place honors for Eric Patterson (photography).

Losers

1. As Blazer fans watched the Bulls pull off a Hollywood-scripted ending to their sixth championship game, they
couldn't help but remember that day, almost exactly 14 years ago, when Portland used its first-round draft pick on a tenderfoot Kentucky center named Bowie instead of a skinny North Carolina guard named Jordan.

2. Lady cops may have plenty of guts, but they got little of the glory last month when the Portland Police Bureau handed out its annual awards. Out of 32 medal recipients, only two--Officer Rikki Venemon and civilian employee Sara Rosson--were women.

 3. Two Oregon legislators won a place of pride among the nation's "Polluter Pack," a list of 24 lawmakers who aren't keeping up with the green '90s. According to the annual ranking by the Federation of State Leagues of Conservation Voters, Oregon state Reps. Lynn Snodgrass and Ron Sunseri may as well be driving the bulldozers themselves. The two Republicans were singled out for consistently voting against measures that would protect forests, control sprawl and safeguard clean air and water.
