WINNERS
1 )Multnomah County Sheriff
Dan Noelle is breathing easier after a gender- and
racial-discrimination lawsuit against him was tossed out
of federal court for insufficient evidence.
2) Good news for Brandy Stroeder,
the McMinnville high schooler whose request for a liver-lung
transplant was denied by the Oregon Health Plan: Motel magnate
Mark Hemstreet offered to pay for the operation,
assuming a donor can be found in time.
3) Two sizable earthquakes rumbled through
Iceland, but Keiko's OK! Yeay! No word about how
much ice got broken!

LOSERS
1) Bad news for school reform advocates:
last week's devastating Oregonian series convincingly
linked Oregon's school overhaul to the state's soaring school
dropout rate.
2) Crooks have even more cause to be worried
about getting caught. The underpaid lawyers of Metropolitan
Public Defenders went on a one-day strike that can't help
but make them cranky and distracted from their court-appointed
duties.
3) Federal investigators are probing deeper
into billing practices at OHSU. The inquiry, which
began last year with a single surgeon, has widened to include
39 practitioners at Pill Hill.
