WINNERS
1. Gerding/Edlen Development, bankrolled by lumber
baron Peter Stott, hopped into the big leagues with its
deal to purchase the Blitz-Weinhard brewery site, five blocks
of prime Pearl District real estate. Sandwiched between
Charlie Hales' beloved 10th Avenue trolley and Mayor Vera
Katz's pet I-405 project, Gerding/Edlen's proposed mixed-use
development is likely to get strong support from whoever
wins the next mayoral election.
2. Gearheads, who have made car racing the country's
second-most popular televised sport, got the ultimate mainstream
endorsement when Nike announced plans to roll out a line
of high-performance, flame-retardant footwear for drivers
and pit monkeys.
3. Sweltering eastsiders get to keep the Sandy River
as a favorite spot for a quick dip. The Troutdale City Council
came to its senses last week, killing a proposal to ban
swimming and hiring a lifeguard instead.

LOSERS
1. While Al Gore was scaling Mount Rainier
last week, his presidential rival, "Dollar" Bill Bradley,
swooped into town collecting endorsements from Rep. Ryan
Deckert, Secretary of State Phil Keisling, former Gov. Neil
Goldschmidt, ex-hoopster Kermit Washington and businessmen
Harry Glickman and Harold Pollin. Bradley also nabbed $150,000
in contributions.
2. Local ambulance company American Medical Response
may need mouth-to-mouth: Last week, a county committee said
AMR did not comply with part of its contract, and the Big
O urged county commissioners to put the contract
out to bid. County officials will vote this week whether
to renew AMR's exclusive contract.
3. Campers and hikers had better take some
green with them when they go into the woods. The state Parks
and Recreation Department just got spanked with an audit,
and its going to start cracking down on scofflaws.
