This story is inspired by my brother, who wishes to remain
anonymous. (But as retribution for the time in high school
when he punched me in the mouth--I had braces--I'll tell you
his name is Rick and he lives in L.A.).
So, anyway...Rick calls and says he's struggling with his
wardrobe, something that hasn't been an issue since Adam
Rosen's bar mitzvah in the 7th grade, to which he wore a
white velvet bow tie and plaid seersucker blazer.
Now a thirty-something director's assistant, he must convey
equal parts
creativity and professionalism. His plea: Could I, the sister
who has always covered his butt, put together a mini-wardrobe
addressing these needs--with the potential benefit of helping
him get laid?
My suggestions were inspired by the timeless look of French
film star Alain Delon, whose suave image symbolized France's
cultural dominance in the late '60s. The look, characterized
by flat-front trousers, sockless loafers, polo-neck sweaters
and aviator shades, is as devastatingly handsome today as
it was then.
Here
You Go Bro': A Guide That's Quite Continental
1. Black wool crepe suit, single breasted, with
full, cuffed trousers. The foundation of any wardrobe.
2. Hip-length, zip-front jacket in black: casual
but sharp. Spring for the suede version in chocolate if
you're feeling flush.
3. Khaki flat-front trousers: dress `em up or down.
4. White poplin dress shirt.
5. Two crew-neck t-shirts: one black, one white.
6. Navy V-neck sweater, in cotton or lightweight
wool to layer.
7. Dark-rinse jeans: dressier than their faded counterpart.
8. Simple black belt with silver hardware.
9. Lug-soled black loafers.
There you have it--a wardrobe capsule to mix and match
according to need. The Alpha Romeo is up to you.
