Somehow, after-shave
has secured a reputation for being as smarmy a substance as
Aqua Velva is a name. As one guy friend says, "It seems like
something people slapped on in the '70s to score." But today's
after-shave is soothing and creamy not bracing and musky.
Ladies, a little insight on what to put on the skin that touches
your face.
1. Salvatore Ferragamo Pour Homme After Shave Emulsion
$37
for 1.7 ounces at Nordstrom, various locations
This is one of the newest fragrances on the market, a spicy,
almost peppery scent with top notes of sandalwood and cedar.
Of course, if you really have a face that needs $37 worth
of moisturizer, you should probably go to the doctor. It's
the designer name and very cool bottle that you're shelling
out for.
2. M Aftershaving Gel by the Body Shop
$9 for 3.5 ounces at the Body Shop, 700 SW 5th Ave.,
226-7141; 12000 SE 82nd Ave.,
653-8384
This aqua-colored gel carries a no-fragrance label, but
it actually smells like something that has been scrubbed
really well--like a person just out of the shower. The directions
urge one to use sparingly, which is sage advice for any
men when it comes to beauty products. Heavy on the aloe,
it's a cool-feeling gel that seems like it would be great
in the summer--and good for razor burn.
3. American Crew After Shave Moisturizer
$7.95
for 5.1 ounces at Trade Secret, many locations
Guys find milky ointments to be unpleasant, which is why
they might fancy something like American Crew after-shave.
It contains all kinds of good stuff, like balm mint, eucalyptus
leaves and avocado oil, and acts as a sturdy moisturizing
cream.
4. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer
$29.50 at
Saks Fifth Avenue, 850 SW 5th Ave., 226-3200
True to its pharmaceutical origins, this moisturizer has
a clean, rather medicinal scent. Technically it's not an
after-shave, which is a plus with hipsters.
5. Burt's Bees Bay Rum Aftershave Balm
$12 for 4 ounces at Nature's Fresh Northwest, various
locations
This smells just like Captain Morgan's, spiked with a bit
of clove. Very piratical, which is kind of fun.
