SPECIAL SECTION
Summer in the City
Our annual guide leads you to adventure and relaxation, whether you stay in town or head out

Summer is the season that makes all the others worth living. Forget fall with its decaying foliage and awful back-to-school perkiness. Dread winter's bleak rain and forced holiday cheer. Shirk spring's impossible, unpredictable weather and debilitating allergens. Summer is the time everyone is waiting for. Though most adults don't get a three-month break--or even a civilized four weeks--there's something about June, July and August that makes even the work week more tolerable. Longer days, warmer weather, sexier clothing, entrenched memories of summer vacations, vitamin D--whatever it is, summer makes everyone happier (well, almost everyone; see page 57).

In fact, sometimes the biggest challenge of the summer is choosing what to do. Is this the year to take up surfing? Or make that long-planned trip to the desert? Should you buy a subscription to Chamber Music Northwest? Or give up your whole life to bike around the country? Our annual summer issue doesn't have all the answers, but it does offer some appetizing suggestions.
