Feeling Fruity

BY CARYN B. BROOKS

GENTLE READERS,
Oh, the news, it beckons. Little birdies do love to twitter in Miss Dish's dainty little ear and whisper sweet somethings. And Miss Dish does like to shout back.

And so it goes:

Lucy Brennan, a former longtime bartendress at Saucebox, is opening in the new year a sure-to-be-hot spot called Mint. The restaurant will focus on Latin American cuisine and feature rum-infused drinks. The place to be will be North Portland near the White Eagle, surely the next Alberta-like hotspot on the radar. Another Saucebox alum will head up the kitchen.

A CERTAIN GREEK GENTLEMAN HAS ASKED MISS DISH TO DINE WITH HIM. SHOULD SHE GO? EMAIL HER AND LET HER KNOW!

Miss Dish does a weekly stint on KNRK radio Tuesday mornings at 8:35 with the lovely Gustav and Daria. These two are supposed to make fruitcakes, and Miss Dish is set to judge. Email them both (gustav@knrk.com and daria@knrk.com) with your advice on the fine art of fruitcake making.

Into the gentle night fled Jamie's Hamburgers on Northwest 23rd Avenue, and now, after a looong wait, it looks like a new tenant is ready to open up. Andrew Smash is a franchise that started in Eugene and has the claim to fame that it offers Andy Burgers, which are meatless, and baked potato wedges called Spuds (hmmm, creative). A further theme ties this totally awesomely rad venture together: The place is made up to resemble an old-school movie theater (sorry, no auditorium seating here!) complete with "pineapple-topped neoclassical columns and 3-D Smash characters." The fun starts Thursday, Dec. 14.

This just in--now you can serve your family on disposable dishware and not feel the least bit guilty about the way you are carving away at this country's natural resources. Some super-smart scientists have whipped up Enviro-wear plates made from non-tree-based pulp that is biodegradable within 100 days when discarded in compost piles. You can find them at Albertson's, Zupan's and Food-4-Less. Almost makes you want to break them like you do at a Greek restaurant. Hmmm.
