Cut of the Day: The Dandy Warhols, "Styggo"

Maybe it's just because David Bowie was one of their biggest champions, but it seems like the Dandy Warhols have experienced a slight uptick in visibility recently. (On these shores, anyway—they're still fairly big across the pond, which always embraced them more than American audiences even in their heyday.) Deserved or not, the band's always gotten a bum rap in Portland, mostly because they dared to be successful, but to their credit, they've never left town, even though they could go to Australia and live like kings. With upcoming 10th album Distortland, the group doubles down on its Stumptown associations, not just in the title but the album art, which depicts a hazy vision of the downtown skyline. "STYGGO" is the second album tease, and a big improvement over first single "You Are Killing Me." Standing for "Some Things You Gotta Get Over," it opens with "Sympathy for the Devil" percussion and a casual disco strut, with Courtney Taylor-Taylor breaking out his disaffected "Godless" hush for a doot-doot-dooting refrain.

Distortland is out April 8 on Dine Alone Records.
