PDX City Council to Trump: Shut Up

All five city commissioners will censure Trump for "hate speech."

All five members of Portland City Council are sponsoring a resolutiop decrying presidential candidate Donald Trump's call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States as "hate speech."

"Donald Trump has recently used the media as a means of spouting vitriolic and divisive comments that have crossed the line into fearmongering and racism," the resolution says.

City Council will vote to censure Trump on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The Portland Tribune first reported Wednesday that Mayor Charlie Hales planned to present the resolution. Hales' spokeswoman, Sara Hottman, says the resolution will be co-sponsored by all five city commissioners.

The resolution is purely symbolic. It calls for "an end to the continued use of anti-Muslim and anti-immigration hate speech."

Last week, WW ran a cover story—titled "PDX to Trump: Drop Dead"—that examined the success of immigrant students in the David Douglas School District. Several of those teenagers said they opposed Trump's views.

"America has a lot of immigrants," one student said. "If they say no, it's not America."
