Grant Magazine Wins Top Honors for Third Year Running

The 22-member student staff is taking home a Columbia Scholastic Press Association's Gold Crown award.

Grant Magazine, published by the students at Portland's Grant High School, won the highest honor high school journalists can receive.

For the third year in a row, Grant took home a Gold Crown Award from Columbia (University) Scholastic Press Association in New York City, where the 22-member staff traveled to collect the honor.

This year, as they did last year, the young journalists won in the hybrid category, one of five high school magazines in the country honored for their combined online and print content.

"It's nice to get recognized for all the hours we put in," said co-editor Eliza Kamerling-Brown, noting the trip wasn't just about the award. "Getting to sit in the newsrooms of The New York Times and The New Yorker and meeting with esteemed journalists is more important. "

The student staffers, who raised nearly $50,000 for the trip, are publishing brief postcard-style updates about their travels on their site.
