Neighborhood: Slabtown

Wedged between I-405 and the Northwest 21st Avenue residential fray, this neighborhood was originally named because a slab is what you’d likely end up on if you went there—or so goes the tale. (read more) It’s now considered to be an area “in transition” as the old industrial/warehouse/gruesome murder base gives way to Pearl District loft overflow, crêpes at Le Happy (1011 NW 16th Ave., 226-1258, lehappy.com), art students from PNCA, the Slabtown (1013 NW 16th Ave., 223-0099) venue’s parade of rock bands and hamburgers, and to the Dandy Warhols’ monument to rockstar hubris, their private, full-city-block Odditorium (1433 NW Quimby St.) recording studio and practice space. Still, the neighborhood remains a cabbie haven thanks to Radio Cab’s nearby headquarters and open-to-the-public gas station (1613 NW Kearney St., 227-1212, radiocab.net), and Yur’s Lounge (717 NW 16th Ave., 224-0160) is still a cabbie haunt despite the art squirts. —Matt Korfhage
