Neighborhood: Eastside Industrial

In a city that gets this much rain, it is useful to have a neighborhood that exists partly beneath bridges. (read more) Under the Burnside Bridge is the guerrilla concrete of Burnside Skatepark; tucked below the Marquam Bridge is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (1945 SE Water Ave., 797-4000, omsi.edu), with its IMAX dome theater projecting gigantic penguins and dinosaurs. In between, its warehouses that have been turned into bars and warehouses that are still used as warehouses. Among the former: the back-deck chill of Produce Row Cafe (204 SE Oak St., 232-8355, producerowcafe.com), the rowdy well My Father’s Place (523 SE Grand Ave., 235-5494, myspace.com/523mfp), and the legendary men’s-room graffiti at rock venue Rotture (315 SE 3rd Ave., 234-5683, rotture.com). Among the latter: the actual produce—and stew hens—on sale at Sheridan Fruit Co. (409 SE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 236-2114, sheridanfruit.com), the party supplies and princess costumes at the Lippman Co. (50 SE Yamhill St., 239-7007, lippmancompany.com), and Tazo Tea Co. (301 SE 2nd Ave., 736-9005, tazo.com), whose brewing process makes the night air smell like cloves. —Aaron Mesh
