Food & Drink

USA! USA!
[DRINKS] Bring a tacky souvenir from any U.S. state to 50 Plates, the Pearl's finest American regional diner, and get killer cocktails at happy-hour prices ($6) all day. 333 NW 13th Ave., 228-5050, 50plates.com.

Potato Heads
[FOOD] The Potato Champion frites stand is one of the city's finest late-night dining destinations. And fry cart owner Mike McKinnon is a huge fan of trivia. Which is why he'll give a free order of large fries or small poutine to anyone who can answer a trivia question from one of two categories: Potato History or Serial Killers! Offer good 8 pm-3 am Wednesday-Thursday and 8-10 pm Friday-Saturday nights through Feb. 14. Potato Champion, northeast corner of Southeast 12th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard, potatochampion.com.

Casca-whaA?
[COFFEE] The coffee kings at Stumptown proclaim they shall give thee a free 8-ounce French press coffee if you announce, "I love cascara tea," at the counter. And to be clear, that'd be a drink made from the skin of dry-milled coffee cherries steeped in hot water, which the roaster just debuted at its cafes, not the age-old Pacific Northwest Native American constipation cure of the same name. Offer good only on Friday, Jan. 30, at Stumptown's downtown location. 128 SW 3rd Ave., 295-6144, stumptowncoffee.com.

Hide the Salami
[FOOD, DRINK] Matchbox Lounge is best known as the place to get a cocktail while waiting out your across-the-street reservation at Pok Pok, but we think the bar's hot salami sandwich is one of the best secrets in town: a two-hander muffaletta with Calabrese salami, pecorino Toscano fresco cheese, olive tapenade and aioli. It's normally $9, but from Friday, Jan. 30, through Friday, Feb. 6, tell a server. "WW sent me," and you'll get the sandwich and a shot of Buffalo Trace bourbon for $7. That should keep you warm for a while. Matchbox Lounge, 3203 SE Division St., 234-7844.

Baaaah-some
[VEGAN] Bring an original haiku about sheep, meat or bicycles to either of Black Sheep Bakery's cafes through Feb. 14 and get a free vegan muffin. The staff's favorite poem earns its author a free box of vegan chocolates for Valentine's Day. 833 SE Main St., 473-8534. 523 NW 19th Ave., 517-5762, blacksheepbakery.com

Appetite for Distraction
[EAT] Southwest Portland's "Food Without Borders" HQ, Salvador Molly's knows you don't have a lotta money for a vacation right now. So, they want you to eat your way around the world. Ask for "Molly and Willy's World Tour" at lunch and nosh on a special half-price menu of $2.95 meals, from Cuban sammies to chicken satay with spicy Thai noodles. The Molly Willy discount is also good for half off the restaurant's daily happy hour—that's $1 kalua pork sliders, bollitos and Rasta rings galore. And there's more: On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, you can nab a $1 dinner plate special by mentioning WW, as well as a $1 drink (one per person, please). Offers are good through Saturday, Feb. 14. 1523 SW Sunset Blvd., 293-1790, salvadormollys.com.

Thoroughbred Drinking
[DRINK] Ten 01 will give you $3 off the Derby cocktail (bourbon, benedictine and bitters, usually $8) if you can tell which drinks on the cocktail menu are named for racehorses at Portland Meadows. Hint: Ask Willy Vlautin. 1001 NW Couch St., 226-3463, ten-01.com.

Bottle-Shop Swap
[DRINK] Bring one unopened, unexpired bottle of anything—soda, shampoo, soy sauce, Schlitz—to Saraveza Bottle Shop and Pasty Tavern and they'll trade you a 12-ounce bottle from their selection of American craft beers. Food and personal products will be donated to charity. 1004 N Killingsworth St., 206-4252, saraveza.com.

Yeasty Goodness
[SUGAR] Voodoo Doughnut feels your pain. In honor of broke-ass Portlanders, the bakery presents the "Hard Knox Box," a dozen classic doughnuts for just $6. Available through the end of February. And remember, if you pay for a Tex-Ass doughnut and eat the whole thing in under a minute and a half, and the purchase price is refunded. 22 SW 3rd Ave., 241-4704. 1501 NE Davis St., 235-2666, voodoodoughnut.com.

Just Like Mom Used to Make
[FROSTING] Well this one is just weird: From Wednesday, Jan. 28, through Sunday, Feb. 8, if you bring in an envelope stamped and addressed to your mom, Saint Cupcake will give you a free full-size cupcake—carrot cake, red velvet or chocolate chip; it's your choice. "We'll send Mommy something wacky, but not super-awful, we promise!" swears co-owner and bakery angel Jami Curl. So, yeah, you're basically trading your mom for frosting. Sold. 407 NW 17th Ave., 473-8760, and 3300 SE Belmont Ave., 235-0078, saintcupcake.com.

Presidential Grapes
[WINE] Recession-friendly bottle shop Cork offers a DIY deal: Make your own coupon on an index card on which you identify five wine regions whose first initials spell out O-B-A-M-A and receive 20 percent off your purchase of a case or more now through Wednesday, Feb. 4. "We'll even help you out," co-owner Darryl Joannides says. "O is for Okanagan Valley." Cork, 2901 NE Alberta St., 281-2675. 1715 NW Lovejoy St., 501-5028, corkwineshop.com.

Big Fromage
Artisan-food purveyor Foster & Dobbs, an excellent pit stop for salami, chocolate, jams, vinegars and cheese, decrees that anyone who can recite an original limerick that includes the name of a cheese (you know, aged Gouda, cheddar) will be rewarded with 20 percent off his or her purchase Saturday, Jan. 31, or Sunday, Feb. 1. "You must be able to recite [your limerick] in front of mixed company," co-owner Luan Schooler gently reminds readers. Bonus: The shop hands out lots of free samples, too. Foster & Dobbs Authentic Foods, 2518 NE 15th Ave., 284-1157, fosteranddobbs.com.

Cheers 4 Less
[BOOZE] Local distiller House Spirits has teamed up with a handful of great restaurants and bars for Recession Proof Mixology. From 5-7 pm every Wednesday through 2010, the boozehounds are pouring high-end cocktails made with local spirits for $5 a pop. Wednesday, Jan. 28, they'll be at Roux; North 45's the destination for Feb. 4; and Bar Avignon is up for Feb. 11. Visit housespirits.com for upcoming dates.

Dog House
[WIENER] If you bring "a piece of hot dog memorabilia" to Northwest Hot Dogs' downtown location, they'll give you a free hot dog through Feb. 14. And yes, they're keeping your stuff. Corner of Southwest 3rd Avenue and Main Street, northwesthotdogs.com.
