Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude was bound to become a cult hit with its quirky storyline of a suicidal young man who has the hots for a free-spirited grandma four times his age. But it was folk troubadour-turned-batshit crazy Muslim evangelist (turned international peace and love guru) Cat Stevens' heartstring-twanging soundtrack that lifted the 1971 film from intergenerational sex romp to an enduring hymn to nonconformity. A special "pre-Valentine's" screening of the film at the Hollywood Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 12, adds a new twist to the affair: Harold and his old-lady love will be serenaded by the audience. A live band, including electro-wizard Solovox and local musician Dale tha'Nail, will play the movie soundtrack live as the film rolls, leading moviegoers in a singalong of Cat classics like "Where Do the Children Play?" and "Don't Be Shy." The movie/music event is the brainchild of party organizer Christian "Krishna" Parkinson, who swears he's seen the film more than 100 times. "[The movie's] one of the most fabulous love-story metaphors I've ever encountered," gushes tha'Nail, whom Parkinson tapped to organize the live band. "We want to make it a fuzzy-bunny-sparkle-pony-love fest."
SEE IT/SING IT: Nice Won! Presents the Harold and Maude Squad with live soundtrack from Dale tha'Nail, Miss Sarah King, Solovox and Stereovision's Dave Camp. Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd., 281-4215. 7 and 9 pm Thursday, Feb. 12. $10 if you bring a donation for the Oregon Food Bank (canned or packaged foods). $15 without a donation.
