Material Girls

What do you picture when you think of a feminist? Power suits? Black leather? Hipster flannel? Whatever it is, odds are, Madonna has done it. Which makes the larger-than-life blond pop icon a surprisingly appropriate avatar for In Other Words' Thursday, Feb. 26, fundraiser, "Madonnathon."

In Other Words is one of the country's last nonprofit feminist bookstores, and like other nonprofits, it's dependent on community support. Part of that community will be coming together at the Hollywood Theatre for an all-Madonna cover bash. As Felina's Arrow, CJ the Dolls, and others perform some of Madonna's greatest hits, the costume contest will reward whoever is brave enough to show up in her black latex bodysuit from 1992.

"It's a tribute to a woman who's opened a lot of doors," says Katie Carter, program director at In Other Words. "She doesn't apologize for who she is. She does what she wants because she likes it." Latex it is, then.

VOGUE: Madonnathon takes place at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd., 281-4215. Doors open at 6 pm, music starts at 7 pm. $8.
