Gossip Should Have No Friends

  1. PAY IT (FASHION) FORWARD: Two weeks ago, Vancouver graphic designer Lisa Hryciw thought it would be a cute idea to stage a mini fashion show for her daughter Sarah’s 15th birthday. That little idea has snowballed into a full-on fashion extravaganza Saturday, March 28, with professional photographers and models who answered Hryciw’s Craigslist ad for unpaid volunteers, and local fashionistas as judges, including Project Runway winner Leanne Marshall. All Marshall, who is friends with Hryciw’s cousin, wanted in exchange for her appearance was free airfare. Proceeds go to the nonprofit Yellow Brick Road Washington, which helps homeless teens in Clark County. “Project Runaway” (get it?) will be held at the Prairie High School auditorium (11500 NE 117th Ave., Vancouver; 7 pm; $10 advance, $15 door).
  2. CLARKBREAKFAST: Morgan Brownlow, founding chef of Clarklewis, has opened a new restaurant at 401 NE 28th Ave. with Marcus Lomax and Moon Sixpence’s Kevin Dorney called Cafe 401. Decorated with particle-board booths and a bar tiled with license plates, the cafe serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, with a menu heavy on the eggs and a full espresso bar. Dishes run $4 to $12. “It’s pretty much just me cooking and running the kitchen,” Brownlow told WW. “We won’t be doing Italian, so my days of overindulgence in Euro product won’t be seen here.”
  1. MAG HIP: What recession? Twenty-two-year-old Brittany McGrath, a local freelance writer and Wend magazine ad rep, is launching Button (buttonmag.com), a new PDX-focused magazine, this month. The independent glossy ($4.99 at local businesses) will target “the unrepresented crowd of 21-to-30-year-old hipsters, independent youths, musicians, local designers and artists” with features on music, fashion and sex for the poor ignored dears. Button’s holding a public launch party with bands, booze and print 7 pm this Friday, March 27, at Worksound Gallery—$10 entry gets you a free copy of the inaugural issue. RSVP at rsvpit.com/main.php.
  2. CORRECTION: Last week’s Scoop reported an out-of-date price. The price of the “Gay Mayor, Black President” T-shirts available at Radish Underground is 20. WW regrets the error.
