This summer’s lineup of outdoor movie screenings isn’t all family-picnic fare. Sure, there are the requisite recent popular flicks (Madagascar 2, Monsters vs. Aliens) and older, popcorny ones (Dirty Dancing, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). But the city has added Marlon Brando (The Wild One) and even classic, idiosyncratic foreign films (Trafic) to this year’s offerings.

Organizations as varied as SmartPark, ASA Flats Lofts, and the Northwest Film Center, often in collaboration with other local businesses, will screen over 50 films between now and September. Pioneer Square’s “Flicks on the Bricks” is sticking exclusively to contemporary classics (though its idea of those extends to movies as recent as Anchorman). To catch what you just missed in theaters on a screen roughly twice as large, Portland Parks and Recreation’s “Movies in the Park” series is where you should head. And, as usual, the Northwest Film Center’s “Top Down: Rooftop Films” series at Hotel deLuxe has an eclectic schedule of the strange and the great.
