Car prowlers stole the belongings of a 13-year-old heart-surgery patient Aug. 7 while the boy recovered at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. The patient’s family was with him at his bedside when thieves stole the boy’s backpack—with a change of clothes and pair of shoes—from the family’s car.

Police found a man beaten to death in his condominium Aug. 8. A medical examiner said the victim died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Kids put aside their summer reading for Multnomah County Central Library’s Block Party on Aug 8. They pet beetles at the Oregon Zoo’s bug petting zoo, learned circus tricks and ate cupcakes.

Security cameras at an Internet cafe caught two thieves who stole a laptop last weekend. Footage showed the man cut the security cable and shoved the laptop down his shorts before he walked out.

A 90-year-old man who had been declared legally blind years ago said his eyesight was restored after he suffered a stroke last weekend. He called 911 when he felt unstable and dizzy, but realized he suddenly could see.

A woman and her dying son were allowed to stay in their home although it went into foreclosure last week. The woman was warned she could have 24 hours to leave her house, which is modified to handle her son’s disabilities. But her mortgage lender made an exception since her son is dying of cerebral palsy.
