A red-tailed hawk found in June at the Oregon Trail Elementary School was released into the wilds of Sauvie Island on Sept. 20. The bird of prey had been found with a gunshot wound, but was nursed back to health by the Audubon Society of Portland.

The Portland Pirate Festival showcased its booty Sept. 19 by breaking the Guinness World Record for “The Largest Gathering of Pirates.” The previous record for people dressing up in pirate gear had 1,467 scurvy mateys at a gathering in England. The new record: 1,651.

The man dubbed “River Rat” by the FBI robbed yet another bank Sept. 18: the Albina Community Credit Union on Northeast Sandy Boulevard. Officials believe the River Rat, whose nickname comes from his robbing banks on both sides of the Columbia, has hit at least six area banks in the past two months.

Chantilly Jade Geigle, 26, was arrested Sept. 17 for allegedly throwing bright red paint on the front steps of City Hall. The date was the third anniversary of James Chasse Jr.’s death, but police would not confirm if the protest was tied to that date.

Charlie, the 39-year-old chimpanzee at the Oregon Zoo, died Sept. 17 of a possible heart attack or stroke. Charlie joined the zoo in 1970 after being rescued as a baby from the bush-meat trade in Sierra Leone.
