MILL TIME: Portland’s Bureau of Development Services and California-based developers the Lab have released new plans for the upcoming redevelopment of the Centennial Mills property on the Willamette. A public meeting to discuss the proposal, which includes turning one-third of the 100-year-old facility into an open wharf, turning the remaining buildings into retail and office space and leaving the Mounted Police Unit stables where they are, will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday, Dec. 3, at 1900 SW 4th Ave., Suite 2500A.
SET TO EXPLODE: By now we’re used to The New York Times big-upping Portland nearly every week. But we still get excited when a smaller band that’s barely toured outside of the PDX bubble gets a nod and a picture in the Big Apple paper. Local dub-punk-dance trio Explode Into Colors—WW’s Best New Band ’09 poll winner—was name-dropped in the Times last week by Gossip singer Beth Ditto, who put the band on a playlist alongside Fever Ray, the Raincoats and Lil Wayne. EIC’s next goal? Actually playing in New York.
ONCE BITTEN: As New Moon continues to smash box-office records, Scoop has uncovered yet another Oregon Twilight connection (OMG!). Turns out 22-year-old University of Oregon student Preston Johnson was a photo/stunt double for Robert Pattinson when Twilight filmed here in 2008 (OMG! OMG!). Johnson piled on pale makeup and fought off crazed fans on the film’s set (his agency had scored him a part as a skating double in Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park). “I still haven’t read the Twilight books. I don’t even think Robert had read it when we were filming,” says the avid ice-hockey player, who made around $150 a day for his part in the three-month shoot (he did not work on New Moon). “When I went and saw New Moon, I got stopped by some [fans]. I thought I was going to disappoint them. You know, ‘Oh, actually, I’m not Robert, I’m just his photo double.’ But they freaked out when I told them. They were so excited. Teenage girls are crazy.” (OMG! OMG! OMG!) IMAGE: Courtesy of Preston Johnson. CLARIFICATION: In last week’s Clublist, we noted that Pearl District bar Jinx had been “marketed as a martini-and-Tater-Tot bar.” Jinx has never advertised itself as such (although it did have Tots on the menu at one point). Also, the story said cocktails were $9. In fact, the bar’s menu includes drinks for $7 and under.
DEPT. OF SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION: Thanks, Portland! Since Wednesday, Nov. 18, you’ve given nearly $139,000 to the 79 awesome local nonprofits featured inWW’s Give!Guide 2009. But some types of nonprofits are getting more help than others. So far the denizens of both the Arts and Education categories—including everything from the Northwest Dance Project to the Pangaea Project—are trailing, with less than $10,000 worth of donations each.
