RED ROCKS: The Thermals went to China, and all we got was this awesome tour diary: A three-part series of Thermals frontman Hutch Harris’ reports from China runs this week on WW’s LocalCut.com. “Chinese leftovers are even better in China,” Harris reports. The Thermals’ first show in China went off swimmingly, he adds, but for one hitch: “The audience is filled with WHITE PEOPLE!   2. POPEMOBILE: This year’s Stumptown Comics Festival (which runs April 24-25 at the Lloyd Center Doubletee Hotel) just keeps getting better. On Monday, organizers announced a special guest: industry heavyweight Paul Pope. Pope—one of the few “rock star” comics creators to actually fit the description—is the man behind Heavy Liquid and Batman: Year 100. Not only is he one of the finest, most stylized artists on the comics scene today, but an engaging, talented writer as well. In summation: We are officially stoked about Stumptown.
  3. JERSEY SCORE: Last week, local retro-pop band Monarques received a surprise phone call from NPR live radio variety showA Prairie Home Companion. Monarques, along with four other bands from across the country, was selected from more than 700 submissions to perform three songs for the show’s 2010 “Battle of the Bands” competition on April 17. “We’re really excited,” singer Josh Spacek says. “Four of the seven of us are from an hour from where we’re performing [New Jersey’s Performing Arts Center], so we’ll be able to play for Chrissy, Corey, Richard and Lee’s parents for the first time.” Check LocalCut.com that week for an exclusive tour diary from the band’s adventures in Jersey.
  1. CLARIFICATION: In last week’s Scoop column we melded two of PDX Bridge Festival’s plans for the city’s bridges this summer into one. The group plans on turfing over a single lane of the Hawthorne Bridge for brunch. The fest also plans to hold a concert on the Morrison Bridge.
  2. CRAIGSLIST JOB POSTING OF THE WEEK: There are still jobs in Portland. In related news, there is also a hotel for dogs. Sniff Dog Hotel, which will be located at 1828 NW Raleigh St., posted an April 2 job announcement seeking a night janitor and supervisor for its upscale pet boarding. “Our employees will hold key roles in revolutionizing the entire pet care industry with the opportunity to live and work your passion for dogs…” the post states. “Your job will include checking on our sleeping dog guests, providing water and spot cleaning canine suites as necessary. ” Reply to job-turkc-1674265954@craigslist.org, but teetotaling dog lovers take note: For reasons we cannot begin to explain, Sniff Dog Hotel has applied for a liquor license with the OLCC.
