Spoiler Alert: We Sniffled At The End Of Lost.

  1. NOTES AND BARS: Despite his incarceration, cellist and WW cover story subject (“A Stitch and Time,” WW, May 12, 2010) Harun Mustafa still managed to make music Saturday when the Portland Cello Project played three pieces he composed behind bars at its concert at the Aladdin Theater, which also included appearances from Storm Large and Laura Gibson. PCP devoted the second set of its sold-out show to the 20-year-old Mustafa, accompanying his former youth ensemble, the Pacific Crest Sinfonietta, on two of his songs before playing a third piece that Mustafa sent to them from jail just days earlier. Mustafa, a promising cello player at Jefferson High School, was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2009 after he cut another teen in a street fight. But the small injury he inflicted looked to many like self-defense. Douglas Jenkins, one of the cellists with the group and a Franklin High School ESL teacher told WW he wanted to draw attention to Mustafa’s story because he felt it could easily happen to one of his own students.
  2. MAHALO SIMPATICA: The latest news from Simpatica/Laurelhurst Market: Benjamin Dyer and his partners are opening a third eastside eatery, this time with a Hawaiian theme. The name? Ate-Oh-Ate). It’s a pun—808 is Hawaii’s area code. And yes, it includes those parentheses. Where? 2452 E Burnside St., in the building that used to house the Velveteria. The gist? Plate lunch, opening in August. The menu? Dyer gives a quick preview: “Yes, we will have Spam (musubi, of course); yes, we will have loco moco; and shave ice (not crushed ice—shave ice).”
  3. BUSHY LEAGUE: Portland’s favorite facial accessory has attained a new level of clout. On Saturday, June 5, in Bend, the first-ever Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships will determine whose facial fuzz is best. All winners get a thousand bucks. Beard Team USA represents the United States at the biennial World Beard and Moustache Championships. The current Miss Oregon, CC Barber, as well as Sarwan Singh—the proud owner of the world’s longest beard—and Capt. Harry Lewis from the show Deadliest Catch will judge while local “beardletes” Justin Cate and Ethan Siegel, a Lewis & Clark astronomy professor, will compete on Portland’s behalf.
