Eat Out

Our favorite places to eat and drink alfresco.

Departure:525 SW Morrison St.
This hotel restaurant's wide-open rooftop deck, 15 stories up, is breathtaking bordering on terrifying.

The Gladstone Coffee and Pizza:3813 SE Gladstone St.
The quiet, covered patio in back, surrounded by green shrubbery, is at its best during the pizza joint's excellent weekend brunch.

Meriwether's Restaurant: 2601 NW Vaughn St.
The sprawling garden behind the restaurant is an Arcadian oasis in industrial Northwest.

Nel Centro:1408 SW 6th Ave.
The most innovative garden we've seen in years includes a vertical wall of ferns and an eight-foot fire pit.

New Old Lompoc:1616 NW 23rd Ave.
The back deck is Willamette Week's sun-dappled summer watering hole of choice.

Noble Rot:1111 E Burnside St.
There's nothing like watching the sun set over downtown from this fourth-floor deck.

Radio Room:1101 NE Alberta St.
This mod bar has two patios—one on the ground floor, with a fire pit, and one upstairs, with a view.

Red Fox:5128 N Albina Ave.
The front-yard patio, which gives the bar a residential air, is the most welcoming beer garden in town.

Whiskey Soda Lounge: 3131 SE Division St.
Two words: beer slushies.

Yakuza:5411 NE 30th Ave.
This neo-izakaya's lush, overgrown garden surrounds a patio scattered with bright red Jetsons chairs. It's delightful.

Be sure to enter the raffle to win a coop, chicken feed or nursery gift certificate. Various locations, see growing-gardens.org/portland-gardening-resources/chickens.php for details. 11 am–3 pm Saturday. Pre-sale tickets available one week in advance. $15.
