Mourning The Loss Of Jimmy Dean And His Sausages.

  1. TRIPPED: Portland-based syndicated political cartoonist Matt Bors is about to leave on his first trip outside of the U.S. since he was a kid: a three-week tour of Afghanistan this August—in the middle of Ramadan, Taliban strikes and a surge of 130,000 American troops. “I’m 26, so [the U.S. has] been in Afghanistan almost my entire adult life. I’ve been drawing cartoons about it the past nine years. It’s time to get out from behind my drawing table,” says Bors, who was asked to tag along on the trip by national cartoonist Ted Rall. The artists will file cartoons from Afghanistan, but first both Rall and Bors will appear at Powell’s this Thursday, June 17 for a “Cartoonapalooza” of political cartoonists. Plus, War Is Boring, Bors’ new graphic-novel collaboration with war correspondent David Axe, hits bookshelves Aug. 3. Check out mattbors.com to chart his trip progress.
  2. ICE SCREAM: Portlanders are old hands at CSA farm shares, but Sarah Hart of Alma Chocolate is launching a CSI—community-supported ice cream—program this summer to finance the purchase of a $4,000 Pacojet ice-cream maker. She says a $150 share gets you a pint of ice cream in flavors like Valrhona chocolate or seasonal fruit every two weeks for a year (July 2010-June 2011). That works out to about $5.25 a pint. “ We’ll also throw in little bags or jars of extra goodies to eat on the ice cream,” she says. “Like toffee peanuts, brownie bites, caramel sauce or even balsamic vinegar.” Email almachocolate@comcast.net or call 517-0262 to sign up now.
  1. DUNGEONS & DRUNKARDS: Winemaker Anne Hubatch will debut her Helioterra Wines label at the winemaking facility and tasting room shared by Grochau and Boedecker cellars on Northwest 30th Avenue. > HS Pub is changing its name to Cozy Pub. > Guardian Games, the center of the city’s Dungeons & Dragons universe, will soon debut a beer and wine bar. > Something called Palace of Industry has applied for a liquor license at the former home of Roots Garden Supply on North Gay Avenue at Killingsworth Street. > And, amen, House Spirits will be open 11 am to 4 pm Sundays starting June 20.
  2. SCHWINN OR GO HOME: The Portland artwork-touring-by-bicycle trend has expanded to movies, as the director and producer of Field Guide to November Days have been premiering their hipster-heavy feature on a 1,600-mile pedaling tour down the West Coast. “It’s an extension of how we made the film,” explains director Nick Peterson, who reports no injuries for him or producer Mary DeFreese on the leg between Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle. The tour, which is chronicled at sampofilms.com, stops at the Hollywood Theatre for an encore screening Wednesday, June 16.
