Men At Work

If you've seen even five minutes of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the subsequent hyper-macho careers of Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving seem like a vaguely hilarious form of overcompensation. (I for one wish Pearce had performed Memento in the guise of Felicia, his magnificently flamboyant drag queen.) That aside, Priscilla remains a clever subversion of the Australian tradition of The Adventures of Barry McKenzie movies: flicks in which an outback bumpkin shocks city slickers. Here, the city—in all its feathered, shimmering, liberated glory—strikes back. R. Bagdad, 9:30 pm Thursday, June 17.

  1. Best paired with: McMenamins Ruby.
  2. Also showing: The Guns of Navarone (Laurelhurst), Oceans (Academy), A Nightmare on Elm Street (Mission).
