Sure, Jack Nicholson’s famous “chicken salad sandwich” diner scene (filmed outside Eugene!) gets all the love, but the best moments in Five Easy Pieces come at the ending. (If you care about spoilers for a film from 1970, you should probably just drive away.) Nicholson’s Bobby Dupea pulls up to a fogbound Gulf station with his pregnant girlfriend; while he fills the tank, she goes inside for a cup of coffee. “You want anything?” she asks—and, well, that’s the question, isn’t it? The subsequent abandonment-by-logging-truck (shot in British Columbia, sorry) is now so iconic that it was recycled to conclude the HBO series Eastbound and Down. Laurelhurst.
